Escaped slave woman Ronnie agrees to return to Arcadia as an agent for the anti-slavery resistance. Already branded, and scarred by the whip, she knows exactly what she is risking, but wants to fight for freedom's cause. After being sold to a sugar farmer her life takes an unexpected turn, and all her beliefs are challenged by events.
At the head of Arcadia's political structure is the lovely Ellen Marshall, a firm believer in the natural rightness of slavery. Ellen is locked into a dangerous dance with the resistance, and when her former rival Fox Klim plots against her a bloody climax becomes inevitable.

A world torn by the institution of slavery
By Jerome Mooney
This is the second part of the saga of a post apocalyptic world torn by the economic, social, and moral issues of slavery. As the slaveholding state of Arcadia comes under increasing pressure from outside forces and internal revolt, it fights to maintain what it believes to be its core institution.
As with the first book the story is told from the point of view of different individuals in all parts of the social structure. While the initial book was largely confined to a small geographical area, we now see a variety of new nations struggling to overcome the loss of technology. While many nations struggle to restore industrialization, others find reliance on servile labor the most efficient, even the most natural, approach.
I particularly like the author's approach of letting the characters make their arguments (and rationalizations) for and against the institution of slavery. As with 'Arcadia' (the first book) there is graphic sexual and violent content that many readers may find disconcerting, but, again, I did not think it was gratuitous.
I look forward to A.D. English' release of the next book in the series and will be at the front of the line (at least on my pad with ready fingers) to purchase.
