Questionable Value

This is a short introduction to leather-working. After purchasing it, I found that simply watching YouTube videos and reading free information gave me much more information than this ebook. I was hoping for more illustration. You will be disappointed if you are any degree of visual learner.

The only upside to this is possibly taking it with me to a leathercraft store (assuming I remember my kindle).

Summary: if you already have an introductory leatherworking book, or are comfortable perusing the internet, skip this book.

Great Leather Craft Book - How to Work Leather

This hobby has fascinated me since I was in the Scouts, years ago. But I'm a newbie in working with leather. This book gave me some great ideas, with step by step instruction. It really covers the whole process from buying leather to tooling, stitching and making projects. I'm looking forward to putting this teaching to work. I'm glad I found this to help me out.

The Zen of Quitting

In an age of commercials for patches and gum that focus on how quitting doesn't suck and that celebrate swapping out nicotine gum for a cigarette, this book offers something different--mindfulness. I've known "former" smokers who have been on the patch for years. While they might smell better and spend less time outside, they were still not dealing with the reasons they used nicotine as a coping tool in the first place. They merely swapped one form for another. And, as Samov and Samov point out, smoking is not a disease--why should we treat it with pharmacueticals as if it were?

Samov and Samov take a different pathway here; instead of demonizing the behavior they seek to help the smoker understand the behavior and the actual benefits of smoking that keep them going back for another cigarette. The first portion of the book discusses the actual physical effects of smoking and helps the reader to understand that there is more to smoking than just the selfish desire to smoke. I'd recommend this first chapter to not only smokers wanting to cut back, but also to their significant others who want to better understand the urge to smoke and how smoking truly is a coping tool.

The second section of the book offers a 30 day prep plan--smoking meditations and koans that lead to more mindful smoking. The goal here is to disrupt the patterns we have with smoking and to make it a deliberate act and choice. The koans or thought exercises get the reader to reflect on larger questions like "what is a nonsmoking" and requires that they look beyond habitual actions.

Through focusing on skillpower instead of willpower, the authors provide a daily practice that helps the smoker to refocus and be mindful of their actions and of the potential effects of those actions. In addition to the 30 days of prep work designed to awaken the smoking zombie/sleep smoker, there is also a section of 20 breathing exercises that can help usher in the "wind of change" by teaching practices like "smoking air."

As a former smoker (and the child of a life-long smoker and a former smoker), I appreciate the way in which there are practical steps and exercises to the program and that it is customizable. The book doesn't say that quitting is the only way to go--instead, there are several pathways the reader can choose and the book covers the issue of relapse, as well as craving control. In addition to the mindful smoking approach, the book also covers mindful eating and addresses how to deal with emotional eating that often replaces the smoking behaviors.

I'd recommend this to anyone considering cutting back or attempting to quit smoking; the behavioral exercises in the book not only would be good for smokers but could be applied to any addictive behavior.

A good tool, with a pinch of salt

I am combining this with another book, but I like the approach to developing the skills readiness needed to truly quit. A bit of picking and choosing is necessary and I find myself skipping some fluff and going back and forth, but it has been helpful and helped me gain more confidence at being able to accept and get past cravings. Some exercises seem like they were devised by non-smokers, like vocalising sighs or ohms while exhaling smoke. That's just unpleasant. The book also had some insightful things to say about lapse and relapse, acceptance and the fear of failure.

Libro incompleto

Este libro me decepciono. Aunque el autor es un reconocido historiador y escritor, este libro le da demasiado énfasis al aspecto económico y a la producción azucarera. Habla muy poco de las figuras principales de la historia cubana. No comenta nada sobre la vida social y cultural de Cuba. A veces le da mas importancia a personajes de EU y España, como si la historia de Cuba hubiera sido regida exclusivamente por estos países.

I Love What You Do For Me, Rabbit Angstrom

Having become enamored with Rabbit Angstrom through this magnificent tetralogy, I was sad to see the end finally come. Rabbit with his highly unlovable ways, his crude sexuality, his ethnic slurs, his disdain for the "dumb mutt" he married, all would normally tend to turn someone off, and yet Updike has made this anti-hero an endearing and enduring creation. Rabbit is the 20th century man in all his dysfunctional glory, who in spite of his many shortcomings, is like an old friend we are immensely fond of and want to keep up with.

Though all the books are well-written, it is in this fourth and final installment that Rabbit and Updike both reach their peak and mesmerize the reader. Rabbit at 55 is feeling the pains of a lifetime of beer-drinking and cholesterol-laden foods. While on an outing with his granddaughter, he suffers his first heart attack and thus begins his long trip into the valley of death and the nostalgic trip down memory lane that so often precedes that.

Looking back on his life, he decides it must be a religious tie that kept him with Janice as he can think of no other reason. Rabbit and Janice are now leading "the good life" and while cocaine-addicted son Nelson runs Springer Motors, the senior Angstroms spend six months of the year in sunny Florida where Rabbit golfs and Janice plays tennis and attends a women's group regularly. It is Janice that has changed most, making the best of her life with Rabbit while enjoying the carefree existence of a snowbird. It is surprising to Rabbit when he discovers that, though outwardly together, to herself Janice will always be the woman who drowned her own daughter.

Rabbit is still deeply interested in American history, but it is his personal history that haunts him-the daughter he thinks is his, the daughter he knows is his but died, the son he can never connect with. When Rabbit commits the ultimate betrayal of his son, he does what he does best, he runs. In classic Rabbit style, he ignores his problems, ignores his doctor's advice, ignores the laws of common decency, and becomes his one and only soulmate.

Rabbit's final run and his last days are some of the most angst-ridden yet best-written pages in contemporary American literature. If anyone ever wants to know how it was to come of age in 1950's America and live through the 1990's, they have no better blueprint for tracing events than the story of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom.

Life catches up with him

Rabbit at Rest is a wonderful book, what more can I say?

During the reading of it, I continually wanted to pass judgment against Rabbit and characterize him as a "bad" person, but I couldn't. Rabbit at 55 years old isn't "bad" - he is a product of 55 years of life and sadly, he cannot seem to figure out how to change himself and get on a smoother road to peace & happiness, even though he wants to, he should, and knows he should.

Rabbit is a man stuck in routine. He talks down to Nelson, obsesses about infidelity, disregards his health, and sees Janice as a "dumb mutt" because he always has and doesn't know how to live his life any other way.

This book makes you think about how many of us there are who just can't figure out how to break out of our routines, even when those routines are unhealthy and killing us. We're all scared of change, just like Rabbit.

They grow up and they never change

In this book, the Angstroms are semi-retired and living in Florida. Rabbit has a heart condition and he's not doing anything to improve his health. His son Nelson has grown into a wreck of an adult, to which Harry and his wife deserve the lion share of the blame. The parents are so old and respectable now, you forget what they put their son through, until he reminds them. You really want to root for Harry to overcome all of the obstacles he faces, like you root for charming outlaws to outrun the posse. You sense that Zeus and the Gods are sitting on Mt. Olympus using Harry Angstrom as their plaything. Despite the fact that Updike is given literature status (this book won the Pulitzer), it's very easy to get into. This isn't long and arduous James Joyce prose, but an easy to follow modern day story that will make you think. The series is either a scathing indictment of latter 20th Century middle-class America that invents their own agony or it's just Updike's view of how normal people live. Whichever, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys serious fiction.
