CHAPTER ONE

The ashes seemed to go on forever.

A thin layer at first, very much like a gentle coating of gray, clinging snow. Deep enough, if only just, to retain the imprints of passing feet--or would have, had there been any.

After barely a few finger widths, however, the fine particles began to compress, suddenly and swiftly. A light dusting became a shifting grit, then a sucking mire. And below even that, the ash had lain so deep, for so long, it had condensed into a layer as unyielding as any earthen crust. If this world even had a surface beyond the omnipresent dust and cinders, it was buried so utterly that it would never again appear to the living.

It filled the air as well, that ash, casting a constant veil across the face of the horizon. It diffused the light into perpetual dusk, blotting out the lingering embers of what had once been a sun. For those rare few unfortunate enough to pass through, it smelled of burnt oils and singed meats; clung to the nostrils and throat in an oily film. The wind was perpetual across the barren land, unimpeded by mountain or forest or wall, refusing to ever let the choking soot settle.

Equally constant, audible over the roaring winds only if one made the effort to listen, came the tolling of an impossible, and impossibly distant, bell. It could not exist, did not exist, anywhere in this blasted realm. Only a lingering echo of what once was, it sounded not so much in the ears as in the memory.

Not merely a dead world, this, but a murdered one. What wide and varied life had once thrived here was long since stripped away, leaving nothing behind but death.

And, more recently, Death.

He stood at the edge of a colorless dune, before a squat, rounded structure, little more than a blister in the ashes, browned and pitted with age. Even the windswept soot seemed unwilling to touch him, rushing around him in short, sharp flurries. The soles of his age-worn boots remained atop even the flimsiest layer of packed ash, as though he were weightless--or perhaps, again, it was merely that the ash wanted nothing to do with him.

Hair as black as a demon’s shadow hung to his shoulders in matted, greasy locks. Below them, torn and stained streamers of bruise-violet fabric whipped and trailed from the back of his belt; perhaps the only remnants of what had once been a tunic or cloak, perhaps something more. The dark leathers and piecemeal armor he wore from the waist down, and the fraying strips that wrapped his palms and forearms, were equally grimy and unkempt. The skin of his exposed torso, shrunk tight over a wiry frame, was the dull gray of a corpse even without the filth in the air.

Only the deeply scored mask hiding his face from all Creation still retained some semblance of cleanliness, of its original bone white. The gaping sockets--through which eyes of burning orange gleamed, unblinking--and the mask’s general shape were enough to evoke a skull in any viewer’s imagination. The lack of mouth, or most other features, somehow made it even worse.

No sentient being remained anywhere in this world to gaze upon him, and the ash-choked air would have made him almost impossible to see even if there were. And still he did not remove the mask; had not, in fact, even given thought to the possibility. It was a part of him now, an immutable barrier between who he was and who he once had been.

Death stood, his hands raised before him, his mask shuddering slightly as his mouth formed constant, silent chants. The magics of the oldest Horseman swept through the winds, delving deep into the ash, and where nothing lived, the ancient dead responded.

Bones, petrified by time and stained by soot, worked and wiggled like snakes on their way to the surface. They punched through to open air, rearing into a veritable thicket and slowly pressing themselves tightly together. They danced, however briefly, to an orchestra that only Death could hear.

Long since dried to flecks of powder, the blood of a thousand corpses transformed once more to liquid, sluicing and bubbling from the depths. Where the bones did not fit perfectly together, that blood surged into the gap, mixing with ambient ash to form a thick, viscous mortar. And where the macabre construction required more meticulous handling than the raw materials could manage, there appeared Death’s helpers. Ghouls--the desiccated corpses of beings never native to this world--materialized from the ether, reanimated and drawn through the walls between realms by the Horseman’s will. With mindless obedience but impossible precision, they arranged the jagged bones just so.

With surprising rapidity, guided by Death’s magic and servants both, a low building began to form over and around the smaller structure. Every so often, faces appeared briefly in the ash to study him as he worked his necromancies--phantoms, perhaps, of the world before, or maybe just tricks of the light.

He sensed the sudden surge of life, a creature appearing nearby where there had been none, at the same moment he heard a warning squawk from above. Wings beating rapidly against the wind, shedding mangy feathers, a hefty crow circled twice and settled on his shoulder.

“Yes, Dust.” Death’s voice was low, sonorous, a stale draft from a yawning sepulcher. “I feel it, too.”

He raised a hand, and the weapon he’d casually laid aside heaved itself into his waiting grip. The scythe was enormous, taller than its wielder. Its blade was a hideous thing, jagged and crafted like the wing of some great beast, longer than Death’s outstretched arms fingertip-to-fingertip. The ghouls ceased their labors and turned in unison, ready to march at the slightest thought.

Dust emitted a second piercing call and took to the air once more--partly to scout for enemies, yes, but also in part to remove himself from possible danger.

“Coward,” Death said, though his tone was not unkind.

He squinted, peering into the soot-thickened wind, and made a swift decision. As quickly as he could think it, his scythe flowed, fluid for less than the blink of an eye. Death was now holding two weapons where there had only been one: two crescent blades, thick and heavy, shaped like knives but larger than most swords. Blades that would be easier to swing and thrust through the violent gusts than the longer, broader scythe.

“I didn’t know you could do that.”

Death had never heard that voice, high and sneering, before. But between the sound and the silhouette appearing through the cloud, he recognized his visitor all the same.

“I am Death,” he said simply, without pomp or vanity, “and Harvester is bound to me. Whatever tools I require to serve my function, it can emulate. Hello, Panoptos.”

“You’ve heard of me! I’m flattered.”

The dusky figure that finally materialized was peculiar even by the Horseman’s standards. Gaunt, almost spindly, humanoid from the waist up, tapering off into semi-solid vapors below. Its arms and fingers were stretched and distended, its wings serrated and broad. Its oblong face, like Death’s mask, lacked anything resembling a mouth, though this didn’t stop it from speaking. Instead, it boasted an array of emerald eyes, shifting and flowing across a vaguely gelatinous surface. Nine of them, usually; though between the constant motion, and the fact that one or two would occasionally disappear, only to sprout anew, the number varied moment by moment.

“Don’t be. The Charred Council told me about you,” Death said. “My brothers told me more about you. Care to guess who I’m most likely to believe?”

“Aww . . .” The creature sniggered softly. “Surely you know better than to listen to rumor and gossip!”

“Depends who’s spreading the rumors.” Death allowed Harvester to return to its innate form, that of the single great scythe, and leaned it against the partial wall of bone. At his silent command, the ghouls resumed their labors.

“So,” Panoptos said, flitting this way and that, untouched by the wailing winds. “Welcome back. Such a lovely home you’ve chosen. Very . . . you.” Already concealed beneath the newer walls of bone, the older, inner structure had apparently escaped his notice.

It wasn’t an oversight Death felt compelled to correct. “I enjoy the view.”

“Heh. Strife said you were a sarcastic bastard.”

“What do you want, Panoptos?”

Clearly, the creature had no interest in answering Death’s question, at least not yet. “Where have you been these past centuries, anyway?”

“I wouldn’t tell the Charred Council when they asked. What makes you think I’ll tell you?”

Again that irritating little laugh. “Why, as a gesture of friendship! I so want us to be friends.”

“It’s good to have goals. Keeps us motivated,” Death told him. “But I wouldn’t wager anything you can’t do without, were I you.”

“How unkind! We’ve only just met!”

“And I already despise you. Imagine how much greater my loathing will become when I have gotten to know you.”

Panoptos might have had a retort for that, or not, but Dust chose that moment to decide the newcomer was safe after all. He dropped from above to settle comfortably on Death’s shoulder, puffing out his feathers and shaking off the worst of the soot.

Every one of Panoptos’s eyes blinked in unison. “Where did the bird come from?” he screeched.

“His name is Dust,” the Horseman said.

“That is not what I asked!”

“And yet, it’s the answer you got. The universe works in mysterious ways.”

“Hmph!” Panoptos darted upward, apparently for no other reason than so he could look down on Death. “Does the Crowfather know you’ve absconded with one of his creatures?” he asked petulantly.

The Council’s errand boy doesn’t care for surprises. Could be a useful thing to know. “What do you want, Panoptos?” he repeated. “I have work to do.”

“Indeed you do. I’m here on behalf of the Council.”

Death just looked at him.

“Ah, well . . . Yes, I suppose you guessed as much. Listen well, then. A phalanx of the White City’s finest soldiers was ambushed recently, by an unknown enemy. The Charred Council wishes you to learn who and why, and to--”

“No.”

Four or five of the creature’s eyes threatened to pop from his face. “What do you mean, no?”

“I wasn’t aware the word had multiple meanings,” Death said.

“When you returned,” Panoptos growled, “after half a millennium, you told the Council you were finally ready to assume your duties!”

“And I am, when necessary. But I’m not required for this. Angels under attack? That’s hardly the Council’s affair at all, unless it represents a violation of the treaties with Hell. Assign one of the others; War and Fury are always eager to--”

“The Council sent for you,” Panoptos said. His voice had gone so cold, frost practically formed along the edges of the words.

“I’m busy trying to make a home for myself.” Death began to turn back to his endeavors.

“You’ll want to look into this yourself, Death.”

“Oddly, I don’t.”

“Oh. Did I neglect to mention that this happened at the borders of Eden?”

Death spun back quickly enough to dislodge Dust from his shoulder. The crow offered an offended caw and fluttered over to perch, sulking, on the half-built structure.

Even without a mouth, Panoptos gave the impression of a sly grin. “I suppose I probably ought to have mentioned that first thing, shouldn’t I?”

The Horseman’s fist were clenched around the haft of Harvester; he didn’t even remember summoning it back to him. Had Panoptos been nearer, it might well have been his throat in the weapon’s place.

“What were the angels doing there? Did anyone breach the garden? Did the assailants get in?”

“I don’t know.” Perhaps realizing he’d pushed a bit further than was safe, Panoptos rose even higher, and his tone softened a touch. “Honestly, I don’t. The Council’s only now hearing first reports of the engagement.”

“Anything else you’ve neglected to mention?” Death rasped up at him.

“Only that the Council wants your report the instant you have an idea of what’s happening. They need to know if this is just another random skirmish at the edges of the treaty, or if something larger is underway.”

Without another word, Death began striding across the desert of ash, leaving the ghouls to finish the work on his home-to‑be. A whistle pierced the air, shrill and painful, one as much spiritual as physical.

And something both spiritual and physical answered the call.

If the reek of decay and the crushing weight of hopelessness took physical form, they would have been the same putrid green as the mist that billowed out of nothing a dozen paces distant. A growing staccato beating resolved itself into the sound of hooves.

Other than the grubby mane and tail, the horse that finally appeared was hairless. Its skin was nearly the same corpse gray as Death’s, and hung open in ragged tears, displaying bone and rotting muscle. From those wounds, from its nostrils and between its broken teeth, and from cracks in its hooves, that mist seeped in constant clouds. The saddle was black leather, worn and tattered; the bridle, a rusted chain.

Death hauled himself into that saddle with a single smooth motion. Harvester, despite its length, never once impeded him. Scarcely had he settled when Dust landed once more on his shoulder. Death nodded once to the crow, a second time to his mount. The horse broke into a gallop that should have been impossible on the soft and shifting surface.

For the first time in five hundred years, the eldest of the Horsemen rode out into Creation to do the bidding of the Charred Council.

Before them, the walls of reality parted, as ephemeral as cobweb and just as readily swept aside. The barren world on which Death had made his home fell away, less palpable than a forgotten dream, and they were elsewhere.

Or, more accurately, nowhere.

Above and all around them were swirling currents of white. Not white mist, or cloud, or haze; just white. Calling it “nothing” lacked accuracy, as this was no absence, but a presence. It just happened to be the presence of emptiness made manifest.

The only real substance wound below them, a snaking trail of reality on which the beast’s hooves trod without sound. Held steady and solid by the power of the Horseman’s will alone, it was quite literally a path between worlds. The rolling whiteness around them muffled sound, offered little sensation of motion--but here, distance had no meaning anyway. The journey from one reality to the next would take as long as it took, and not even Death truly knew why.

The tedium afforded him the opportunity to think on what had happened. It wasn’t necessarily an advantage.

Eden. He could have gladly gone until the end of time without ever again hearing the name Eden.

The Dark Side Has Cookies So C'mon!
By Nickolas X. P. Sharps
I'm one of those guys that plays video games for the story. I much prefer a solid campaign over online multiplayer any day of the week. For this reason I am a huge advocate of tie-in fiction. I love to delve deeper into characters and events that are barely touched upon while playing the game. When I caught word of a prequel novel to the Darksiders franchise from THQ my interest was piqued. When I saw that it would be penned by Ari Marmell, author of the Young Adult Widdershins series, I was sold. May I present you, DARKSIDERS: THE ABOMINATION VAULT.

There exists a vault containing weapons of unimaginable power. The vault remains a legacy of the atrocities committed by the Nephilim. Of the four Horsemen, the last surviving Nephilim and protectors of the Balance, only Death is aware of its being. Now an unknown enemy strikes from the shadows, intent on acquiring the weapons stored within the vault and unleashing a wave of destruction across Creation. Only Death, with the assistance of his younger brother War, has the ability to prevent the coming catastrophe.

I know what you're thinking, how deliciously melodramatic! Oh and it is. I eat this sort of thing right up. As a fan of the Darksiders video games and an even bigger fan of the Darksiders lore, how could I not want to read this book? Combine that with the sharp wit of Marmell and you have a winning combination.

I have to admit, I found myself pleasantly surprised at the level of characterization bestowed upon Death. I won't pretend that he is the deepest of characters but there are levels of complexity beyond super powered Horseman of the Apocalypse. Death's facetious responses to every given question can become grating after a time, but until that time comes it continues to be tongue-in-cheek funny. I found myself laughing every time Death interacted with his craven crow Dust and I very much hope this carries over into the game itself. What Ari does best with Death is pair him up with War. Though both are Horsemen it quickly becomes apparent that they have very dissimilar styles. Death is a subtle and agile assassin with a history so dark he refuses to share it, even with his fellow Horsemen. War is a soldier at heart, choosing the direct approach with overwhelming force. While Death picks and chooses his objectives as he sees fit, War instead follows the Charred Council's missions to the letter. I find this use of comparison a wise move, especially when pairing the novel with the upcoming Darksiders II, where Death will be replacing War as the protagonist.

As Death races to prevent the Abomination Vault from being unlocked he crosses paths with faces bound to be familiar to the fans. Anyone who has not yet played Darksiders and is reading this book on its own merits is unlikely to find themselves a fish out of water. The concepts and characters are straightforward enough to grasp in one sitting. The lore itself is only expanded by the novel, providing backstory on Death and other notables while serving as a reminder for what drew me to the franchise to begin with. There are angels and demons and Horsemen of the Apocalypse but the story strays far from Biblical, establishing its own fiction.

Marmell's clever prose is evident but not as distinguishable as it might have been without outside influences. The narrative is more linear than I would prefer, evidently resembling stage progression in a video game. The action is fluid, exhibiting the combat differences between Death and War. Death's shapeshifting scythe, Harvester, is wicked cool and I'm eager to wield it in game. I can imagine THQ developing downloadable content based on DARKSIDERS: THE ABOMINATION VAULT, and I fully approve of the idea.

Tie-in fiction has an undeservedly bad reputation with the literary crowd. DARKSIDERS: THE ABOMINATION VAULT aptly demonstrates that in the right hands, tie-in fiction can be just as good as any other book you will find in the genre. Marmell respects the source material, expands the lore, and boosts anticipation of the coming game. This makes for a successful combo.

Recommended Age: 14+
Language: Nothing more than mildly offensive.
Violence: With characters named War and Death...well...you can do the math.
Sex: None.

This book is a great way to learn a bit more about how the Darksiders universe works and flesh out the characters a bit more. I nearly finished it in one sitting.

Where to Draw the Line: How to Set Healthy Boundaries Every Day, by Anne Katherine

From the acclaimed author of the perennial favorite Boundaries, Where to Draw the Line is a practical guide to establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries in many different situations.

With every encounter, we either demonstrate that we’ll protect what we value or that we’ll give ourselves away. Healthy boundaries preserve our integrity. Unlike defenses, which isolate us from our true selves and from those we love, boundaries filter out harm.

This book provides the tools and insights needed to create boundaries so that we can allow time and energy for the things that matter—and helps break down limiting defenses that stunt personal growth. Focusing on every facet of daily life—from friendships and sexual relationships to dress and appearance to money, food, and psychotherapy—Katherine presents case studies highlighting the ways in which individuals violate their own boundaries or let other people breach them. Using real-life examples, from self-sacrificing mothers to obsessive neat freaks, she offers specific advice on making choices that balance one’s own needs with the needs of others.

Boundaries are the unseen structures that support healthy, productive lives. Where to Draw the Line shows readers how to strengthen them and hold them in place every day.

From Library Journal
The premise here is that people all have many demands on their time and that by setting boundaries they may protect their time and energy for the things that matter most. Being in complete agreement with this idea, the first thing this reviewer should say is that she doesn't have the time to read a whole book about setting boundaries. Although important, this topic could have been adequately covered as a couple of chapters in a larger book on life management. Mental health counselor Katherine (Boundaries) discusses setting boundaries with friends, relatives, lovers, and exes. Other reasonable topics include anger, intimacy, sex, and divorce. Among the more frivolous chapters are those covering tidiness, food, Internet, and therapist boundaries. The author does give helpful examples of each type of boundary, with advice on where to draw the line. The topics seem so specialized, though, that audience appeal is limited. Purchase is warranted only for extensive self-help collections.AKathy Ingels Helmond, Indianapolis-Marion Cty. P.L.

Chapter 1: What Are Boundaries?

Pause a moment. Stand on the earth and sense the spiral of your life. You have not come to this place by chance. All your choices have brought you here.

You created this life by the people you let in and the people you shut out, by giving your time to the quests that matter and by letting hours trickle toward lesser goals, through the pursuits to which you gave your energy, by the pressures to which you gave heed.

Every decision you've ever made, step by step, brought you to this pass. In short, your boundaries -- or your defenses -- created a corridor through which your life moved.

What is a boundary? A boundary is a limit that promotes integrity. At the most elemental level, your skin marks your physical limits. If it is ripped, the integrity of your body is threatened. Your cells hold their shape because a membrane contains them. Your nerves are sheathed. Your brain is protected by blood and bone.

Thousands of other boundaries might also be yours, protecting every treasured aspect of your life -- your relationships, your time, your home, the way you do things, your children, your priorities, your health, and your money. These boundaries are unseen, held in place by your decisions and actions.

A boundary is a limit. By the limits you set, you protect the integrity of your day, your energy and spirit, the health of your relationships, the pursuits of your heart. Each day is shaped by your choices. When you violate your own boundaries or let another violate them, stuffing spills out of your life.

A boundary is like a membrane that keeps an organism intact. It lets positive things through. It keeps harmful things out. In this way it operates quite differently from a defense, which indiscriminately keeps things out.

Boundaries provide a clear moral compass. They keep us on track. They protect the important, tender parts of ourselves.

Look at the parts of your life that work, that have integrity. This wholeness comes from the limits you have set to protect them.

Any part of your life that is not working can be improved by boundaries. Whether the organism is you, your body, your health, a friendship, your marriage, your work, or your energy, its integrity can be strengthened by boundaries.

This book is a boundary handbook. It can help you discover the walls that are missing as well as rules or customs that confine you to one place, preventing you from occupying the wider spaces. It will also expose defenses that you may have erected in place of healthy boundaries -- defenses that may do a lot of harm to you and your relationships.

We all make constant decisions about how to use this minute and that minute, whether to say yes or no to that request, whether to respond to a friend's need or rest a bit. It's the little decisions that can use up our lives, that can either support or sabotage our larger mission.

This book is about how to handle the daily demands of life in a way that protects your time and energy for the things that matter. It can help you to be clearer about what to include and what to leave out, so that you can fill the spaces of your life with the people, activities, and pursuits that are truly yours.

You are the only one who can change your life.

Excellent book on boundaries and codependence!
By A Customer
When my counselor recommended me to read this book, I had no clue what I was in for. This book opened my eyes to all of the unhealthy patterns we have in our relationships and where they come from. It has literally changed my life. Thanks to this book, I am more in touch with myself and have more fulfilling relationships with others in which we truly care about one another. If you'd like to learn about yourself and are really ready for some positive change (it will be painful at first but it is definitely worth it), try this book. The other book I highly recommend on this topic is "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. Sato has an unbelievable ability to show us how complex things like internal conflict and relationships work in the simplest ways. Good luck on your transformation!

This should be required reading for everyone on the planet!
By Celia Bauer
I am in my 40s and read this book with the eye-opening wonder of a very clueless child. So many times I read things here that were a complete revelation to me and I'd think to myself, wow, I'm allowed to say that to someone?!?! Yes, we are allowed to speak our own truth and put our needs above our habit of pleasing others at our own expense! I like that she writes about different topics and gives examples of what to say when someone crosses the line. This is info I can put to work and have already. She also dissected some conversations, pointing out where someone was being manipulative. I can now see that I have been manipulated in conversations and it was such a light bulb moment to understand how it was happening and how to handle it in the future. I raved about the book to friends while I was reading it and three of them wanted to borrow it when I was done. When I finished, I decided I couldnt bear to let go of my copy so I bought three copies as gifts. Money well spent. I intend to buy two more copies for my teenage niece and nephew as well. If everyone could read this book, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, the planet would be a safer, saner and more peaceful place.

Caution: Will Change Your Life
By L. Wingard
Read this in kindle format and will be ordering the physical book so I can re-read and experience it again. My whole life I have struggled with boundary setting with others, for fear of the "consequences" of having a voice. This book has freed me, and will continue to free me as I practice this new skill in real life.

When Magic Burns (Darkly Fae Book 3), by Tera Lynn Childs

A thrilling, romance-filled series of YA fantasy novellas set in a hidden magical fae realm from the award-winning author of Oh. My. Gods. and Forgive My Fins.

“From magic, to fairies and to hidden worlds, Childs will surely get you hooked on this fantasy filled novella!” —Talina at Sassy and Dangerous about When Magic Sleeps

When magic burns, the world ignites.

There is no fiercer fae in the Morainian guard than Regan McCrae. Orphaned as a child, she has dedicated her life to the protection of her clan. She eats, sleeps, and breathes her noble duty. Only in her most private thoughts does she admit to be dreaming of romance…and of capturing the heart of her clan’s younger prince. When she learns he has been taken prisoner, her only thoughts are of rescuing him. But her captain and her high prince have a more desperate mission in mind.

Cheerful and cheeky Peter Duncan comes from a long line of human seers who are sworn to guard the unseelie fae when they are vulnerable in animal form. Those in his position are expected to remain neutral, but he’s always been friends with the Moraine. He doesn’t care about stodgy old rules and regulations. But he does care about doing something more valuable with his life than just standing watch. When the high prince calls him to the palace and asks for his help, he jumps at the chance.

As danger and destruction loom at the edges of the fae realm, a faithful warrior with a secret longing and a human who has never taken anything too seriously must attempt an impossible task where failure means unimaginable consequences.

Another fun installment in the Darkly Fae series
By yaratr
I really liked Peter- his humor/ pretending to not take things seriously hides his courage but he definitely lets it show when needed. When he finds out the animal form of his crush it was so amusing! And the ending definitely left me wanting to read the next chapter in the series.

I really liked this edition to the novella series. The original charterers are back with the addition of Regan and Peter. Regan is a Morainian guard and Peter is Human Seer who guards the fae when they are in their animal form. A mission has them joining forces. Very enjoyable.

Failure to Adjust: How Americans Got Left Behind in the Global Economy (A Council on Foreign Relations Book), by Edward Alden

Americans know that something has gone wrong in this country’s effort to prosper in the face of growing global economic competition. The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for most Americans. This book is the story of what went wrong, and how to correct the course. It is a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. Failure to Adjust argues that, despite the deep partisan divisions over how best to respond to America’s competitive challenges, there is achievable common ground on such issues as fostering innovation, overhauling tax rules to encourage investment in the United States, boosting graduation rates, investing in infrastructure, and streamlining regulations. The federal government needs to become more like U.S. state governments in embracing economic competitiveness as a central function of government. The book presents an especially timely analysis of the trade policies of the Obama administration, and discusses how America can reassert itself as the leader in setting rules for international economic competition that would spread the benefits of global trade and investment more broadly.

Review
Rising opposition to globalization has thrown an already polarized political environment in America into near mayhem, with our key economic partnerships hanging in the balance. Ted Alden provides a cogent and constructive analysis of the origins of opposition to economic openness that charts a viable path forward. It is essential reading for all who care about America's role in the global economy. (Gordon Hanson, Pacific Economic Cooperation Chair in International Economic Relations at UCSD and Director, Center on Global Transformation)

“Ted Alden hits the nail on the head with this cogent analysis of the trade issue, its impact on American workers, our failure to meaningfully help those adversely affected and what we should now be doing to save globalization by adopting more thoughtful and far-reaching policies.” (Steven Rattner, Chairman, Willett Advisors LLC)

"Ted Alden's new book, Failure to Adjust, captures vividly the inherent tension in America’s role in the post-war global economy: that between the principal architect and guardian of an open system, on the one hand, and a participant and competitor within that system, on the other. That tension cannot be removed. But in Alden’s thoughtful analysis, as the global economy grows, the balance between player and referee that needed to shift in America in favor of the former, has been late in coming. It is a really interesting and detailed assessment, that avoids overly simple diagnoses and prescriptions."
(Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate and William R. Berkley Professor in Economics and Business, New York University)

[Alden] demonstrates how four decades of market-friendly economic and trade policies have been insufficiently inclusive, setting the stage for the populist backlash we’re now experiencing. (Sebastian Mallaby, The Wall Street Journal)

About the Author
Edward Alden is the Bernard L. Schwartz senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and the author of The Closing of the American Border: Terrorism, Immigration and Security Since 9/11 (Harper, 2008), which was a finalist for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize.

A Must-Read Book
By Michael A. Holt
The author, Edward Alden, was the co-project director of a 2011 Independent Task Force Report on US Trade and Investment Policy sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations. He points out that this report served as one of the foundations for his excellent new book, "Failure to Adust," so some familiarity with that report should also be helpful.

The report contains a number of excellent recommendations that the Task Force made to the Obama administration in 2011, but is also worth reading because it captures the Zeitgeist that Donald Trump was able to identify and harness some four years later, which propelled him to a victorious election as our next President of the United States.

For example, the Report concluded that "unless the US government can devise and implement trade and investment policies that benefit more Americans by sparking greater investment and jobs in the US linked to the global economy, it will be impossible to rebuild public support for trade policy. In other words, it was not enough to say that globalization would lead to a larger pie; a growing number of Americans were asking "Where is my slice?"

It also concluded that the primary reason for the stalling of US trade policy is the serious employment and income pressures so many Americans face. Many have dismissed the extent to which globalization has contributed to these employment and income pressures, pointing to the fact that technology--including, for example, automation--has also led to job losses and downward pressures.

But, in "Failure to Adjust" Edward Alden, citing a 2013 NBER working paper titled "Untangling Trade and Technology," points out that "import competition and technology have quite different impacts on the US workforce; while technology and trade are both disruptive, import competition has a much bigger impact on labor markets. Those who lose their jobs to computers are likely to find new ones, while those who lose their jobs to imports are much less likely to do so." He explains that "if companies invested in machinery that required fewer workers, or if new technologies made some jobs obsolete, then those workers would not likely find jobs doing the same type of work they had done previously. But if the companies reinvested their profits domestically, other sorts of jobs would be created that would at least partly compensate. ...In a more global market, however, the circle could be less virtuous."

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but building upon insights such as this is what make the analysis and recommendations that follow to be so compelling. (It should be noted that while Donald Trump was able to tap into the right wing populist sentiment that emanated largely from globalization, President-elect Trump's policy prescriptions may not bear any resemblance to the domestic and international trade & investment policies found in this book.)

A Timely Book
By Sonia
Failure to Adjust is particularly timely in light of the recent election and the rise of populist anti-trade movements that have been overtaking the United States and Western Europe. The book provides great background on the post-World War II conditions that made American manufacturing conditions so favorable, and creates a compelling framework on how to move forward through redesigning the corporate tax system, fostering innovation, and promoting education to reinvigorate labor. Alden’s recommendations are particularly insightful when it comes to considering how the United States can set the rules for international trade, balancing its role as a bastion of free-market capitalism with keeping its own economy competitive without resorting to highly ineffective protectionist measures that only provide short-term solutions to American job losses. Great read!

Spot on analysis and discussion of the right issues.
By Z Reviewer
Another fantastic book by Edward Alden. As with his previous works, he focuses in on the right question and issue: not whether trade is good or bad for the American economy (the wrong/politicized question that dominated this year's presidential campaign) -- but how the overall forces of globalization overall have impacted it. More importantly, he charts a pragmatic -- and attractive -- path forward. A must read for anyone who cares about American competitiveness.

This book provides a fundamental introduction to numerical analysis suitable for undergraduate students in mathematics, computer science, physical sciences, and engineering. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with calculus and has taken a structured programming course. The text has enough material fitted modularly for either a single-term course or a year sequence. In short, the book contains enough material so that instructors will be able to select topics appropriate to their needs.

Students of various backgrounds should find numerical methods quite interesting and useful, and this is kept in mind throughout the book. Thus, there is a wide variety of examples and problems that help to sharpen one's skill in both the theory and practice of numerical analysis. Computer calculations are presented in the form of tables and graphs whenever possible so that the resulting numerical approximations are easier to visualize and interpret. MATLAB programs are the vehicle for presenting the underlying numerical algorithms.

Emphasis is placed on understanding why numerical methods work and their limitations. This is challenging and involves a balance between theory, error analysis, and readability. An error analysis for each method is presented in a fashion that is appropriate for the method at hand, yet does not turn off the reader. A mathematical derivation for each method is given that uses elementary results and builds the student's understanding of calculus. Computer assignments using MATLAB give students an opportunity to practice their skills at scientific programming.

Shorter numerical exercises can be carried out with a pocket calculator/computer, and the longer ones can be done using MATLAB subroutinie libraries. It is left for the instructor to guide the students regarding the pedagogical use of numerical computations. Each instructor can make assignments that are appropriate to the available computing resources. Experimentation with the MATLAB subroutine libraries is encouraged. These materials can be used to assist students in the completion of the numerical analysis component of computer laboratory exercises.

In this edition a section on Bezier curves has been added to the end of the chapter on curve fitting. Additionally, the chapter on numerical optimization has been expanded to include an introduction to both direct and derivative based methods for optimizing functions of one or more variables. A listing of the MATLAB programs in this textbook is available upon request from the authors (http://math.fullerton.edu/mathews/numerical.html). An instructor's solution manual for the exercise sets is available from the publisher.

Previously, we took the attitude that any software program that students mastered would work fine. However, many students entering this course have yet to master a programming language (computer science students excepted). MATLAB has become the tool of nearly all engineers and applied mathematicians, and its newest versions have improved the programming aspects. So we think that students will have an easier and more productive time in this MATLAB version of our text.

Deceptive Title

This book was a waste of time for me. It's a decent numerical methods book but it's basically a textbook in Numerical Methods (which I already have).

Sprinkling a few lines of Matlab code in does not make it a Matlab book.

Satisfactory, but with flaws

The Math Part:

I have to use this as the main text for a college math class, and while it may be a good reference book or engineering text, I don't think it's the best choice for a math course. It's written in such a way that you can flip to the section/topic you need and immediately get the main points and the formulas. But the authors don't necessarily teach their materials in the most intuitive way and frankly, don't seem that concerned with intuition at all. This makes the book quite sufficient as reference for your computations in your bioinformatics research project and such, but for a math text I would be more interested in really owning the intuition and tricky ideas so I can generalize to new cases or derive the formulas, rather than discovering 20 gazillion technical details/equations that will magically spew out an answer for who knows what reason. See the bajillion formulas on cubic splines for what I mean. Or see how instead of simple example + intuition, the authors chose to do 20 pages demonstrating Gaussian elimination.

The Matlab Part:

I learned Matlab in a few weeks from "Mastering MATLAB 7" and playing around with it on my own. It's very easy to just use the built-in manual or find all kinds of solutions to common problems using Google. There's really nothing wrong or tedious with picking up Matlab knowledge "from the manuals, man pages, the Internet, etc..." as one reviewer complained, because a language is necessarily something you pick up gradually and continually. Personally I think the reviewer was misleading in implying that this book does a good job teaching beginners Matlab. There's 1-2 programs per section, and no explanations in terms of the programming. Honestly, what are the chances that these programs will just drop into your lap and fit perfectly whatever application it is that you presumably need these numerical methods for? You will need to tailor the programs to your objectives or at least, understand WHY and HOW they work, in order to really take advantage of them, and that is outside the scope of this book. What this book really offers are the algorithms behind the programs, and not the programs themselves that are useful. In my opinion the Matlab programs were just a selling point, that's all.

There were also lots of little things that I personally just did not like about the book, where I felt the authors cut corners in their explanations or didn't phrase certain things in the best ways or used slightly funky notation or were not organized enough. Not a great math book in my opinion. But objectively speaking most people probably don't mind those kinds of details and aren't necessarily looking for a math book. So with that in mind I give it a 4.

Whether you are an instructor for an Engineering class, Life Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, or simply want to add practical mathematical analysis and programming, this book is the book you should use. I have been using Matlab for a number of years, and I had to pick up my Matlab knowledge from the manuals, man pages, the Internet, etc... and finding out the ins and outs of how to do something was not always an easy task nor accurate. Mathews and Fink's book put all you need to know about the most popular Mathematical methods at your finger tips. The book is tailored such that it can be used alone in a Mathematics course, or as reference in an Engineering course. One field of study that has enjoyed the power and flexibility of Matlab in the recent years is Computational Biology or Bioinformatics. Even though there are plenty of applications popping up here and there for this area of research, the area is still very much untapped and algorithms need to be developed for it as we go forward. Matlab is the best way to try out these new or improved algorithms, and use some of the available tools out there to generate C source code from your Matlab files. This method of algorithms development could save you tons of time, since Matlab makes numerical programming very simple.

The authors start with the basics in Numerical Methods; assuming that this book will be used as the primary text book in the course. A very good assumption, and the instructors who choose otherwise, can always skip the preliminaries. The context of text aims to provide a good balance of theory and application. One way that the authors try to keep this balance is to talk about "error" rate for the algorithms in question. The students are thought the limitations of Matlab along with the strengths of the software, and error analysis is one way to show the students that the results of numerical analysis is Matlab is not perfect, and more importantly why. This error analysis is done for every major algorithm and method presented in the text, and a number of methodologies are presented to help the student in figuring out this rate.

Authors start the main contents of the book with a representation of basic Linear Systems followed by a more complicated topic of Polynomial Approximation. Taylor Series and Lagrange Approximations are thoroughly covered in theory followed by examples that are solved by "hand" and by Matlab. The examples are complete, and can even be used, at least to start with, for the problem sets at the end of the chapter. As one would guess, curve fitting is the next topic of discussion. As you know, numerical techniques in science and engineering often requires curve fitting of experimental data. Starting with simple techniques of Least-Squares Lines, non-Linear Least-Square Methods and ending with the four different flavors of Spline Functions. The Matlab examples becomes more advanced as the topic progresses, and more and more examples are given as the topics get more complicated as well.

One can not learn Numerical Methods without a deep understanding of Numerical Differentiation and Numerical Integrations. Numerical methods for Differentiation are used to solve boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Heat Transfer, Semiconductor Physics and Device Modeling, an Physical modeling of Molecules are just some of the examples that use these numerical differentiation techniques to solve problems. As is the case with the book, the authors start talking the theory behind how numerical differentiation works, and then, they go into the Matlab representation of the problem. Various approximation methods are presented, and error rate for each approximation method is also calculated in detail - both by hand and using Matlab.

Numerical Integration is a bit more difficult, as there are a number of ways to calculate the area under a curve. The authors present four numerical methods in detail: quadrature, composite trapezoidal, adaptive quadrature and Gauss-Legendre Integration. Each theory is followed by an example Matlab programs. The authors wrap up the text by talking about differential equations and partials differential equations. These two topics are difficult without using numerical methods, and it is even harder to follow the numerical theory of these topics. The authors take a slightly different approach to these topics. They start with examples from the get go. Instead of laying down the theory, they start each chapter with relevant examples from simple to more complex and abstract. Wave Equations and Heat Transfer equations are well known applications of PDE that are presented in detail. Eigenvalues, eigenvectors and the Jacodi's Meothod wrap up this text by j. H. Mathews and K. D. Fink.

I would recommend this book to be used for second year Mathematics, Physical Sciences or Engineering students. A course in Numerical Methods would benefit greatly from this book. Other students can certainly use this text to assist them with modeling, simulation and statistical problems in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and various Applied Chemistry and Physics courses.
