5-stars without hesitation.
By Boycee
Muay Thai and Muay Boran is about more than just body conditioning and learning techniques. Whilst Master Lee's books teach you comprehensive and effective techniques in those areas, they also teach you the essential techniques in the other area necessary for success, namely mental conditioning and strategy. Combining these two aspects will open you up to new possibilities in your fighting and philosophy, resulting in a complete approach that will give you the strength of mind and body to either leave in peace or attack with devastating effect. Some of the techniques described by Master Lee in this book are so simple yet devastatingly effective. I recommend keeping these books close at hand and repeating the techniques as often as possible. I give all of Master Lee's books 5-stars without hesitation.

Wired for Healing - Remapping the Brain to Recover from Chronic and Mysterious Illnesses, by Annie Hopper

Annie Hopper had exhausted the medical system and was still suffering from disabling symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivities, fibromyalgia and electric hypersensitivity syndrome. Hopper deduced that a toxic trauma had over-activated threat and protective mechanisms in her brain that were keeping her body stuck in a cycle of chronic illness and inflammation. In her ensuing search for healing, she created The Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS) program - a drug-free, neuroplasticity-based approach to remap neural pathways in the limbic system. Since 2008, the program has helped countless people recover from many chronic conditions that have baffled the medical system for decades, such as Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Pain, Food Sensitivities, Electric Hypersensitivity Syndrome, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression and Anxiety, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Inflammatory Conditions and other Chronic Illnesses.
Wired for Healing; Remapping the Brain to Recover from Chronic and Mysterious Illnesses, is Hopper's account of the innovative science behind DNRS and sheds light on how trauma causes the brain to disorganize neural circuits. Hopper also shares her personal recovery story as well as triumphant stories of recovery from people who have been liberated from chronic and mysterious illnesses through remapping the brain.
The book is not a replacement for the Dynamic Neural Retraining System™ DVD program or the In-person program.

Review
Annie Hopper weaves together cutting-edge scientific research based on neurological rehabilitation and functional imaging, with the age-old traditions of mindfulness and healing. Her program has the potential to significantly dampen inflammatory conditions and, perhaps more importantly, encourage self-empowerment. --Dr. Cynthia Li, MD, Internal Medicine, Berkeley, CA

Annie Hopper's program, which addresses the limbic system engrained memory aspect of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and many other conditions, is the only way I have found for some patients to get out of their illnesses. Physical treatment is often just not enough. There are now patients I won't even begin to treat until they go through her program. --Dr. William Shrader, MD, Environmental Medicine, Santa Fe, NM

Annie Hopper understands that in order for our brains to cope with the world, the feeling - thinking - integrating - and - doing - circuits need to talk to each other. Annie Hopper understands these principles, and, as her work demonstrates, is able to use these in a practical and sensible manner, in a way that resonates. Her work enables our brains to become more efficient communicators, not only with ourselves but with the world around us. Read this book! --Dr. Les Koopowitz, MBBCh, FFPsych (SA), Clinical Associate Professor in Psychiatry, University of Adelaide, Practising in Neuropsychiatry

About the Author
Author Annie Hopper is an internationally recognized expert on toxic brain injuries, limbic system dysfunction and rehabilitation. Her speaking engagements include the Canadian Brain Injury Association, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, and the Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association.

Revolutionary. Saved My Life.
By Pachamama
I am a living example of the miracles that are possible by applying the techniques and scientifically sound neuroplasticity-based therapy--specifically Annie Hopper's Dynamic Neural Retraining System--written about in her incredible, profound, ground-breaking first book, "Wired For Healing." Hopper's cutting-edge approach to healing "mystery" illnesses through re-wiring the brain and healing its dysfunctional, impaired, injured limbic system (that which processes trauma and gets "stuck" in a traumatic loop, and thus begins "cross-wiring" and improperly filtering information, thus producing strange and frightening physiological responses) is not only revolutionary, in the big picture scheme of things for millions out there suffering from limbic system disorders due to trauma/injury--but for myself, it literally saved my life. Not just changed it, but gave me my life back. Literally.

Before my injury, I was a happy, passionate, fearless, confident, independent, successful, vitally healthy, world-traveler. As a result of a combined injury from mold biotoxin illness/black mold exposure and a pharmaceutical injury (overdoses at the hands of doctors) in the midst of several other traumatic incidents, including a car accident and a pregnancy loss--at my lowest point I was in an wheelchair, unable to walk, bedridden for months and in ER's and hospitalized dozens of times, had severe POTS (Postural Orthoststatic Tachycardia Syndrome, aka heart rate racing over 100 BPM upon standing) and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions to everything--food, medicines, chemicals, perfumes, exhaust, electricity, the environment, life itself--and could only eat 2 foods. I weighed 83 lbs. I was housebound for several years (and could not travel outside of my small town) and if I left the house I wore a mask everywhere ~ a "girl in a bubble," allergic to the world, who was totally dependent on others to survive. I lived in constant fear, a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from so many frightening "life or death" experiences. (And I wasn't afraid of dying, I was afraid of being terrorized and further traumatized, while alive.) I had no quality of life left. I was frightened, depressed, miserable and a shadow of my former, once joyous and thriving, healthy self.

I shelled out huge amounts of money over a 10 year period, I literally tried everything. Every healing modality, every protocol, everything you can think of, to the Nth degree and back again. NOTHING worked. Some things worked a bit, but I would end up back in the same place, or worse. I felt cursed. (And as someone who helped others heal, by profession, I took it extra hard that no matter what I did, I could not "heal myself.") I always knew there was some missing link--but I couldn't figure out what it was, and I no longer had the time, energy, money or mental faculties or acuity to continue to dig. I almost gave up. Actually I did, several times--but then I would pick myself back up and try again. But I was depressed, unhappy and chronically ill with a list of symptoms and grievances longer than the Gettysburg address. I was told by doctors, both traditional and environmental, that it was unlikely that I would ever recover from this list of chronic illnesses and would have to live with them for the rest of my life and learn to adapt. But I couldn't adapt to a life that was no life at all. I was losing the will to live.

And then, like a shot out of the blue, when I had almost given up all hope, like an answered prayer--that's when I found Annie Hopper's work, and the Dynamic Neural Retraining System. Although by that point, I was naturally filled with skepticism and doubt (as most people with Limbic System Impairment are, due to their experiences), even with my initial resistance to it, a part of me intuitively and innately knew that this was the missing link. After seeing Annie's description of Limbic System Injury and its effects on YouTube (now beautifully and thoroughly detailed in this book, for you) as well as the testimonials of people just like me, it made sense--and if other people could recover--why couldn't I? I wept at their stories, and of their re-claimed lives. So I gave it one last chance. On my last leg, I purchased the DVDs and then when I was well enough to do so (yes, that happened from the DVDs), I got myself to an in person Limbic System Rehabilitation Program (2013), hosted by the inimitable, awe-inspiring powerhouse Annie Hopper and the fantastic Candy Widdifield. What happened after that is beyond words, so I will just cut to the chase. I have a New Life. I am now 100% fully and completely recovered from ALL of those conditions.

I did the 5 day in person program and the 6 months of daily neuroplasticity-based therapy/brain re-wiring exercises, in order to repair the injury in the limbic system--which is stuck in an unconscious/subconscious maladapted stress response--and to restore it to proper functioning. (And I continue to do the practices to this day, for the outstanding quality of life they give me.) Initially, it was incredibly hard work and constant, relentless dedicated effort and unwavering commitment, 24/7--that's what it takes to rewire and remap the infrastructure of your brain, down to the level of the unconscious, which runs your biology--but every single second was and IS worth it, to re-claim your entire life. BEYOND worth it. As Annie says: "It's hard work--working for a miracle!" And when, like me, you are healthy and free to live your life again, unfettered and unbound from what once felt like a prison--you will thank the heavens, and Annie Hopper, each and every day--for giving you the key to unlock yourself from your hellish cell, to free yourself back out into the world again. And I did it. I healed myself, with the priceless gift of Annie's technology, and the indispensable support of the DNRS coaches and forum.

What can I do now? Everything. You name it. I can go anywhere and do anything and eat and drink anything I want, anytime I want, with ease, grace, and confidence. Not only can I smell perfumes, but I often truly enjoy them and can wear them if I would like. (That's if I even notice them anymore, which I rarely do, and if I do, it's positive.) I can sit in crowds and go to the theater. I can go to stores, malls, concerts--take my daughter to see Santa at Christmas! I can eat at restaurants, go to huge parties, get stuck in traffic on the freeway. I can go on road-trips and stay in hotels, easy peasy. I can dine outdoors on crowded streets, go to museums, parades, festivals, galleries, go dancing -- have a drink at a bar! I can eat nuts and ALL things that I used to have anaphylactic reactions to. (Can you imagine?) I can go to brand new, freshly painted buildings, no problem. I can be in old buildings. I can travel. I can work. I can paint my nails, have facials and get highlights in my hair! This is HUGE. (UNTHINKABLE for nearly 8 years! And a BIG deal for a woman.) I can be alone, If I would like. I am independent and thriving! I am the Mom, the partner and the woman that I want to be. I can do ANYTHING I want, without a second thought! I am a normal person again. I can take medicine. I've even had anesthesia and a surgical procedure and sailed through it with ease, unimaginable before! I love myself and I love my life. I can wear make-up, use hairspray, drive my daughter to school. The everyday little things that most people take for granted, all of which are MIRACLES for me. I AM a MIRACLE.

But most importantly--I am HAPPY. Not only as happy as I was before the injury, but even happier than I can remember. And that may be the biggest miracle of all: alongside my restored health, vitality and well-being (with the lab results to prove it), my quality of life has been profoundly transformed, beyond measure. I am happy and joyous, I laugh and sing and dance--life and I are best friends again and I savor every single second of it. I am in love with life again, and I feel safe in the world and in my body. I am calm and capable and confident, with a renewed vigor and zest and passion for life that I thought was gone. I am happier than I've been in 15 years, maybe truly happier than I've ever been in my entire life, now that I have mastery over my brain and am in the driver's seat--now having witnessed and lived firsthand what miracles are possible through harnessing the power of the brain. That I am, and we are, indeed, truly--wired for healing. All we need is a map and a little toolbox, and Annie's got one. And it's a science. Neuroscience. It's a brain injury that causes the symptoms, and when the injury is addressed at the root, it addresses everything. What Annie has created, like a brilliant engineer, a neuroplastician, is a technology that works, if you apply it. As she says, "With this protocol, the brain has no other choice but to change." And the body follows. When you read the amazing, unbelievably true stories in this book, you will feel your hope begin to alight anew, that this type of full recovery, this restored quality of life is also possible for YOU. It is. I am living proof.

The work outlined in this book is the future of modern medicine, the healing of the future available to you NOW. Through the neuroplasticity-based therapy and rehabilitation process of DNRS, as outlined in Annie Hopper's "Wired For Healing," I have re-trained my brain, transformed my health and re-claimed my life. And if I can do it--so can you.

Give yourself the gift of this book and Annie Hopper's revolutionary work. You just might--like I did--save your own life.

A book-long advertisement for her DVDs and workshops
By Julie
This book doesn't describe what her method is. It provides a description of the science behind the method and lots of stories about how the method has helped people, but it doesn't say what you do. The method may be fantastic and effective, but you're not going to learn how to do it here. I had already read Norman Doidge's The Brain That Changes Itself, which gives a deeper description of the science, and I'm not interested in the testimonials, so for me, the book offered nothing.

Get the book. Trust me.
By Kathryn
This book is a ground breaker. Annie Hopper did all the research, developed the program and has now written the book which explains all the mystery illnesses of our time. It's readable. She simplifies the science. If you have ever had an illness that defied medecine or left you limited and hopeless, get this book. It will be the game changer. Even if you are not sick with an immune system illness, MCS, fibro, CFS and you just want to manage stress, get this book so you will understand how to act back on your body through the use of your mind and brain. Mine is marked up, underlined and highlighted, as one does when so much of what one is reading jumps off the page. Lives are changing. Great job, Annie Hopper.

Alien Sky (Alien Hunters Book 2), by Daniel Arenson

The Singularity. The day the machines gained awareness. The day they turned cruel. The day they overthrew their makers.

In a distant star system, a planet-sized computer unleashes its hosts: fleets of warships, armies of robots, and a swarm of killer drones. Their purpose is one: destroy all life.

As the cosmos crumbles, one team steps up to the plate: The Alien Hunters.

The Alien Hunters are galactic pest controllers, not an army. Their spaceship is old and clunky. They specialize in crushing the odd space bug, not a fleet of vicious machines. They're a rolled-up newspaper when the cosmos needs an A-bomb.

But they're fast, they're brave, and they're just foolhardy enough to charge right into battle. As the robots spread across the galaxy, slaying all in their path, the Alien Hunters fly out to meet them. The war between life and machine begins.

ARENSON IS A PHENOMENAL STORY TELLER!!!
By Barbara McKinley
Alien Sky picks up right where it needed to after reading ALIEN HUNTER. There are so many plots within plots that anything he wrote would be okay. But Arenson kept the story roaring along with suspense, adventure, romance and comedy. You can't help but love the main characters. Please tell me that there are more than 3 books in the series. I have preordered #3 and hope it comes out sooner rather than later.

I recommend this book for young adult, adult and seniors alike. I would recommend reading the books in sequence so you understand the story better.

KUDOS Mr. Arenson on another tale exquisitely told....keep writing.

Detroit: An American Autopsy, by Charlie LeDuff

An explosive exposé of America’s lost prosperity—from Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Charlie LeDuff

Back in his broken hometown, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charlie LeDuff searches the ruins of Detroit for clues to his family’s troubled past. Having led us on the way up, Detroit now seems to be leading us on the way down. Once the richest city in America, Detroit is now the nation’s poorest. Once the vanguard of America’s machine age—mass-production, blue-collar jobs, and automobiles—Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, dropouts, and foreclosures. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark, and the righteous indignation only a native son possesses, LeDuff sets out to uncover what destroyed his city. He beats on the doors of union bosses and homeless squatters, powerful businessmen and struggling homeowners and the ordinary people holding the city together by sheer determination. Detroit: An American Autopsy is an unbelievable story of a hard town in a rough time filled with some of the strangest and strongest people our country has to offer.

From Booklist
After a career as a Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter with the New York Times, LeDuff answered the longing to return to his roots in Detroit, a city that was once at the forefront of American industry and growth. What he returned to was a city now more famous for its corruption and decay. LeDuff reprises the shenanigans of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and city councilwoman Monica Conyers and others before the slow-moving justice process caught up with them. Among the other signs of decay: a police department so broke that cops take the bus to crime scenes and a fire department so bereft it sells its brass poles as scrap. He reports on surreptitious meetings with police officers to counter rosy reports of declining crime rates. He also reports on the personal toll the city’s decline has taken on its citizens, including his own family, with grim stories of his brothers’ chronic unemployment and his sister’s and niece’s deaths from drug overdoses. With the emotions of personal connection and the clear-eyed detachment of a reporter, LeDuff examines what Detroit’s decline means for other American cities. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"LeDuff returns, by the books end, to the bar where his sister was last seen, only to find it unrecognizable. A black man outside explains the changes. 'they trying to put something nice up' in this hellhole he says, speaking of the bar specifically, though his words spread across the city and pay tribute, in equal measure, to its dreamers, its pessimists and to those, resigned and wrung out, who love it despite all. 'Can't say it's working. But what you gonna do? You ain’t gonna be reincarnated, so you got to do the best you can with the moment you got. Do the best you can and try to be good.' LeDuff has done his best, and his book is better than good."
—Paul Clemens, New York Times Book Review

"One cannot read Mr. LeDuff's amalgam of memoir and reportage and not be shaken by the cold eye he casts on hard truths... A little gonzo, a little gumshoe, some gawker, some good-Samaritan—it is hard to ignore reporting like Mr. LeDuff's."
—The Wall Street Journal

“Pultizer-Prize-winning journalist LeDuff (Work and Other Sins) delivers an edgy portrait of the decline, destruction, and possible redemption of his hometown…LeDuff writes with honesty and compassion about a city that’s destroying itself–and breaking his heart.”
—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

“A book full of both literary grace and hard-won world-weariness…. Iggy Pop meets Jim Carroll and Charles Bukowski”
—Kirkus

“This is our pick for a sleeper nonfiction hit next year. Charlie LeDuff is a remarkable journalist, and this book is filled with incredible writing as he witnesses his home city crumble through neglect and corruption.”
—Huffington Post

“What to do when you’re a reporter and your native city is rotting away? If you’re LeDuff, you leave The New York Times and head into the wreckage to ride with firemen, hang with the corrupt pols, and retrace your own family’s sad steps through drugs. Others have written well about the city, but none with the visceral anger, the hair-tearing frustration, and the hungry humanity of LeDuff.”
—Newsweek

Advance Praise for Detroit:

"You wouldn't think a book about the stinking decay of the American dream could be this engaging, this irreverent, this laugh-at-loud funny. But not everyone can write like Charlie LeDuff. I'm tempted to say he's the writer for our desperate times the way Steinbeck and Orwell were for other people's desperate times, except he's such an original he's like no one but himself."
—Alexandra Fuller, author of Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness and Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight

"Charlie LeDuff is a drunkard, a blowhard, a Fox News Reporter -- and a brilliant writer. Detroit is full of righteous anger and heartbreaking details. It's also funny as hell. Hunter S. Thompson would've loved every page of this book."
—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation and Reefer Madness

"In Detroit: An American Autopsy, Charlie LeDuff brings alive the reality of our beloved city. The city where I was shot at eight times during my twenty six year police career. Yet, Detroit has survived in spite of corruption, political ineptness, poor education, and decades of unemployment. Detroit: An American Autopsy is a must read for all of America."
—Detroit Police Chief Ike McKinnon (retired); Associate Professor of Education, University of Detroit Mercy

Down and dirty account of the decline and fall of the Motor City.
By Paul Tognetti
"Studying the city through the windshield now, it wasn't frightening anymore. It was empty and forlorn and pathetic. On some blocks not a single home was occupied, the structures having fallen victim to desertion and the arsonist's match. I drove blocks without seeing a living soul." -- p. 71

It was not quite the homecoming that Charlie LeDuff had hoped for. LeDuff had won a Pulitzer Prize during an 11year stint as a staff reporter for the New York Times. In 2007 he abruptly quit his gig as a member of the Times Los Angeles bureau after he decided that he was tired of L.A. and that his wife and three year old daughter really needed to be around family. Charlie LeDuff's clan resided in and around the city of Detroit. Much to his surprise when he contacted the lowly, virtually bankrupt Detroit News about a position he found that one was available. The die was now cast. His bosses at The News had already figured out the best way to utilize their talented new reporter. They told him to "chronicle the decline of the Great Industrial American City." This was going to be right up his alley. Charlie LeDuff liked to get his fingernails dirty. He knew things were pretty bad in his hometown but until he actually arrived there he had no idea just how ugly it had gotten. "Detroit: An American Autopsy" is the rough and tumble story of a city in total free fall. Perhaps what is most frightening about what you will read in this book is that what has happened in Detroit could well be repeated in a number of other major urban areas around this nation.

So just who is to blame for the demise of this once great American city? Depending on your politics just about everyone has a theory. Liberals point their finger at the greedy executives of the auto industry and Wall Street who shifted hundreds of thousands of jobs away from the Motor City to places like Mexico. Conservatives on the other hand would tend to blame ill-advised trade legislation like NAFTA and the corrupt Democratic political machine that has run this city for decades for many of the problems. But when Charlie LeDuff started to crunch some numbers what he found was simply astounding. To fully understand just how far Detroit has fallen you need to know that in its heyday in the 1960's the city boasted a total population of 1.9 million. By the early 1990's that number had fallen to 1.2 million. Now in 2013 the population of Detroit has dwindled to fewer than 700,000 people! Meanwhile, there are in the neighborhood of 62,000 vacant houses in Detroit. It seems all that left is a destitute underclass and an extremely corrupt bureaucracy. City services such as police and fire and public works are a joke. The equipment these public servants are forced to use is antiquated and extremely unreliable. Staffing has been cut to the bone. Another barometer of just how bad things have gotten in Detroit is the number of dead bodies piling up at the morgue. LeDuff reports that on any given day there are around 250 unclaimed bodies. One has sat there for more than two years!

Throughout the pages of "Detroit: An American Autopsy" Charlie LeDuff shines the spotlight on all of ills of this once proud metropolis including unemployment, illiteracy, foreclosure, arson, murder and widespread bureaucratic corruption. It is all too much for those who remain. This is a dangerous place to be. Along the way LeDuff investigates the corrupt city administration, looks into the death of a beloved veteran firefighter killed during an arson and chronicles the most bizarre real life murder story you will likely ever hear. And yet, despite it all the author points out that there are still many good people here who are doing their best to stop the bleeding. You will meet a number of them in this book who despite the odds consistently go above and beyond the call of duty in a largely vain attempt to save the city they love.

"Detroit: An American Autopsy" is a riveting expose of the decline and fall of a once great American city. Recently, Forbes magazine pointed to Detroit as "the most miserable city in America". After reading this book it is easy to see why! I had heard stories but had no idea that things were this bad. Some would argue that it is probably too late to save Detroit but Charlie LeDuff would beg to differ. In spite of all the problems he encountered during the two years of reporting it took to cobble together this book he still sees a glimmer of hope out there. This really is a story that needed to be told. Other American cities would do well to learn from the myriad mistakes made here lest they suffer the same fate. "Detroit: An American Autopsy" would be a great choice for anyone interested in the future of major American cities and for general readers as well. The language gets a bit colorful from time to time but as I pointed out earlier Charlie LeDuff likes to get his fingernails dirty. Highly recommended!

Grim, unrelenting, blunt and harsh - but not exploitative
By Nathan Webster
A lot's been said about "Decay Porn," where reporters/writers/photographers from out of the city sort of parachute into Detroit and then pontificate about whatever they've observed. It's not that their observations are invalid, but they obviously lack a personal perspective.

Charlie LeDuff, a native Detroiter who grew up, left, then came back, has the zeal of a missionary and the anger of someone who knows nothing he says can make a lick of difference. So this narrative of connected essayish accounts doesn't offer a solution as much as a passionate sermon of rubbing-your-face-in-it. But if one can't offer a solution, at least a writer can take a reader to the ground level that's often overlooked by those more focused on the big picture.

Most of these chapters originally appeared as newspaper reportage that LeDuff has fleshed out in more detail. That's not a problem, and he's done a good job of connecting all the anecdotes together so it reads as a consistent narrative. LeDuff is both primary character and narrator, and his strong, sometimes strident, voice carries the story along.

His 'characters,' police, firemen, occasional politicians, are of the tough-as-nails variety. I don't think the 'good guys' will mind their portrayals, even if they are a little over-the-top at times. With that, they seem to be treated fairly and honestly and their stories are not exploited for casual emotional gain.

The villains come across as slothful, incompetent and venal - all believable politicians and hacks.

It's four stars mostly because it's one-note at times. The stories are generally depressing and terrible, just like Detroit life, and there's not too many bright spots. Hard to love a book like that - but LeDuff's great writing style and powerful storytelling makes it easy to like. Any fan of Hunter Thompson will appreciate his take-no-prisoners literary approach.

I can't imagine liking LeDuff if I met him. I feel like he'd be an overpowering personality interested in what people have to say only as long as it's interesting to him. But that sort of focus on the "people as story" is how you end up with a strong piece of reportage like this. Tell the story, don't spare the feelings, and if it's harsh and ugly, people need to suck it up and learn a few things.

Blisteringly Honest
By Shlok Vaidya
I've read and written a lot about how America is dying. Regulatory capture, Wall Street, global arbitrage and deviant entrepreneurs collaborated to massacre the middle class.

But I always came at it from the perspective that the country is mid-collapse. That we still have time. That we can still swing the wheel and, for the most part, make it through. Sure, we'll pay $8 for a gallon of gas, we'll overpay for armies of contractors we don't need, but we will make it through. We're America after all.

Charlie LeDuff convinced me we may be too late. The book is aptly titled, Detroit: An American Autopsy. What if the land of the free, of prosperity, of two cars and a picket fence succumbed to the corrupt, the incompetent, the immoral?

He describes the imbeciles that run Detroit - not just its corrupt, race-baiting politicians, but also the evil puppet masters, the CEOs, that pulled their strings. He takes us on a journey through those we abandoned on the front line, one he describes as a "landscape of fire and human failing." We watch them live, fight, and die. He talks to the workers in factories, once producing subprime mortgages, now reduced to relabeling screws. He speaks with the mothers of the dead. We walk with him as he tries to make change, failing more often than not. His own life is inexorably tied into that of his failed city, so we feel his guilt, his family's mourning, the pain of finding work, the toll it takes.

He writes like Naipaul. Blisteringly honest. Solid, real flow.

And it presents the viewpoint that we're not careening into failure. We're already there. Ours is a state soon to be hollowed out by failed cities. America was murdered. What we live in is fundamentally different from what we had. We're in the middle of launching what is new. Its time to approach it that way.

Regardless of whether you believe in American decline or not, this book presents a compelling, unflinching perspective that is worth reading.

Becoming a bit out of date, but still a decent overview!
By Syed Z. Hosain
I had provided an earlier review of this book, so this is more
of an additional comment.
The copy I have is still one of the ones I start with to get a
basic overview of the subject matter. It is starting to get a
bit out of date, yes, but still a decent read. Again, it has some
grammatical errors (as pointed out by another reviewer), but
that is not essential to the content. Also, PCS was (and still
is to some degree) too "new" at the time this was written
to be included and this should not be held against the author.
As I have mentioned before, to dive into detail requires a copy
of the relevent standards (expensively available from Global
Engineering), so this kind of overview has a place on the shelf
- for quick basic checks, if nothing else!

An excellent overview of cellular communications
By A Customer
This is an excellent overview of the various cellular communication technologies in use today. The text has a good blend of general information about Analog AMPS, TDMA and CDMA, and also provides enough detail about each of these technologies to be very useful as an overview text (complete detail usually requires a perusal of the relevant EIA/TIA standards so I do not expect any text to provide that degree of information.) Please note I have only skimmed the radio and antenna sections of this book and cannot comment on those chapters.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
The book is badly written and has huge gaps.
By A Customer
Prospective readers should heed the following warnings:
(1) The term "cellular" is used here in the restrictive sense that excludes the PCS band.
(2) The author may know his subject, but his grasp of English grammar and syntax is pathetic.
(3) Much of the material piled together here was already obsolete in the first edition, let alone the second.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“Star Wars: Aftermath [reveals] what happened after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. It turns out, there’s more than just the Empire for the good guys to worry about.”—The Hollywood Reporter

As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance—now a fledgling New Republic—presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy’s scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate. But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy’s strength is unfolding. Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but he’s taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Meanwhile, on the planet’s surface, former rebel fighter Norra Wexley has returned to her native world—war weary, ready to reunite with her estranged son, and eager to build a new life in some distant place. But when Norra intercepts Wedge Antilles’s urgent distress call, she realizes her time as a freedom fighter is not yet over. What she doesn’t know is just how close the enemy is—or how decisive and dangerous her new mission will be.

Determined to preserve the Empire’s power, the surviving Imperial elite are converging on Akiva for a top-secret emergency summit—to consolidate their forces and rally for a counterstrike. But they haven’t reckoned on Norra and her newfound allies—her technical-genius son, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and a reprobate Imperial defector—who are prepared to do whatever they must to end the Empire’s oppressive reign once and for all.

Praise for Aftermath

“The Force is strong with Star Wars: Aftermath.”—Alternative Nation

“The Star Wars universe is fresh and new again, and just as rich and mysterious as it always was.”—Den of Geek

“[Chuck] Wendig neatly captures the current states of the Empire and Rebel Alliance and does so through flawed, real, and nuanced characters. His writing gets you up close and personal. . . . Wendig does wonders with dialogue and voice and carving out space for everyone to breathe. Aftermath is a strong foot forward into unexplored territory and puts down just enough foundation that you can start picturing the Resistance and First Order of The Force Awakens taking shape.”—Nerdist

“If the opening chapter of the Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy is any indication, the ‘Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will be every bit as exciting as the movie.”—New York Daily News

“A wonderful Star Wars adventure by a gifted author.”—SF Book Reviews

The Book Awakens, The Story Sleeps
By Jeff Godemann
Finally finished this one today. It wasn't as abysmal as other reviewers made it out to be, but it definitely wasn't my favorite Star Wars read.

Things I liked:

- Yay! New post-ROTJ stories leading up to "The Force Awakens"! Cool!
- Admiral Sloane. The first real link between the time period depicted in the "Rebels" TV series (and the "A New Dawn" novel) and the post-ROTJ continuity. Plus, she's a pretty well-rounded character. Unlike most of the rest in this book.
- The Interludes. Honestly, I would've liked a book with just a bunch of short stories on all these planets dealing with the...uhhhh...aftermath of the destruction of the second Death Star. That would've been much more compelling than the small story we got here.
- A reference to "Fulcrum." Interesting.
- The last third of the book (roughly). Once the action started picking up I found myself much more eager to find out what happened.

Things about which I was indifferent:

- All of the previous post-ROTJ continuity built up over the past 25 years is out the window. Meh. Trying to follow all of that would've put everybody in a bind, so I can't blame Disney for that decision.
- The present tense narrative style. Not my cup of blue milk (more on that later). That doesn't make it bad writing, just a style for which I don't care. Did make it a little bit more difficult to read, but wasn't a show-stopper.
- ANY of the characters besides Sloane. Although I guess that should be a negative.

Things I didn't like:

- Way too many idioms, metaphors, and terms from our world when a Star Wars term could've been used instead. Inhabitants of the Star Wars universe don't say, "Cup of tea," they would probably say, "Cup of blue milk" or something like that. A special ops guy in trouble wouldn't use words like "pigeon" and "falcon," he'd use "myknock" and "hawkbat." Would somebody in Star Wars say, "Spit in the eye of the giant," or would it be, "rancor" or even, "pull the tail of the gundark"? These are the sorts of things that separate a Star Wars story from any other story.
- Is Nora alive or dead? I didn't care the first time, so I really didn't care the fourth or fifth time (I lost count).
- A supposed professional combat pilot for the Rebel Alliance didn't know that a TIE fighter had an ejector seat. Oh, and an ejection mechanism isn't placed to where it can be randomly activated by accident. THAT is lazy writing.
- Shallow characters with little depth or background. Pretty clichéd, too. The end of the book implied further adventures with this crew. Not excited about that prospect.
- The first two thirds of the book with the incessant introspection and interpersonal conflict between mom and son, bounty hunter and former Imperial, Sloane (JUST SHOOT THEM) and the tired stereotypical members of the council, and the insipid Mr. Bones.
- Admiral Ackbar and Wedge Antilles. These two (along with the other, even briefer Original Trilogy character appearances) felt shoehorned in. Didn't add much to the story, although with the new continuity there at least is an element of "they might not survive." Yeah, I'm sure they were setups for future books.

Things which offended me on a personal level:

- Wait for it...wait for it...WRONG!!! Nope, not what you're thinking. What offended me was the use of the word "hale" to identify the pieces of ice present inside a thunderstorm. As a weatherman for over 20 years, well, my eyes are still rolling. It's spelled "hail." THAT, more than anything else, took me right out of the story. :-)

Read 85+ Star Wars novels, couldn't finish this one
By Asa
I'm a big fan of Star Wars books. I've read through a total of 85 novels including books in the old Expanded Universe (now called Legends) and in the new canon. Most I found extremely enjoyable reads (see below for a list of some favorites), and even the ones with the most implausible plot points (examples: The Crystal Star, Darksaber) I had no trouble finishing and still enjoyed parts of them.

This one, I could not finish. At first I thought I just needed to adjust to the author's style, but after slogging past halfway there was no improvement.
I couldn't find the characters likable or intriguing. They seemed to have simple motivations and would act on them with no subtlety at all. Overhear someone in your rebel-aligned group confess they had been an Imperial officer at Endor? Charge into the room and throttle them! Even non-original characters are affected. Every scene with Admiral Ackbar seems to be there so he can advise caution and worry about things being traps.

Every few pages I would hit something that completely smashed my suspension of disbelief causing me to have to look away from the page and take a break. Things like:

-An asteroid field setting which apparently was once a comet in the Outer Rim of the galaxy. This comet was on course to destroy multiple Core region worlds, until a large number of Jedi gave their lives and/or sanity breaking it apart with the Force to save the day. Does the author know what a comet is?
-Several of the main characters escaping from a mixed mob of stormtroopers and criminal gangsters in a bar alley. One arrives with a getaway hover bike and all but one fit on. The solution for the last character? Grab some chain, tie it to the body of an alien they had just shot, and surf along the street to freedom and safety.
-A main character's inner monologue is wondering why they have to be so involved with the Rebellion, and can't just be peaceful like the Bith couple they are watching on a nearby rooftop. Immediately a TIE flies overhead and the couple angrily wave fists and yell, futilely shooting blaster-fire at the fighter.

These kinds of facepalm-inducing plot points made it impossible to believe or stay immersed in the story. Between that and how simple-minded the characters were, it felt like I was listening to a tabletop roleplay session, where the GM and the players are all black-out drunk and I was stuck as the designated driver. Wookiepedia lists a factoid saying Wendig wrote this book in under 45 days, and it really, really shows.

My recommendation: Don't let this be your first, and maybe therefore last :( , Star Wars book. Don't let the bestseller status mislead you. This was supposed to be the new "What happens after Return of the Jedi?" book. Any book in that position would sell well, even if it were written by a cat with a pen name walking on a keyboard. I checked this book out from the library, and am glad I did not buy it. If you want to enjoy reading a Star Wars book, this is probably not the one. I've put some favorites below, and any of those would serve you well. Lost Stars and Tarkin are in the new canon while the rest are in the old Expanded Universe.

Some favorites:
Lost Stars
Heir to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command
Specter of the Past
Vision of the Future
Outbound Flight
Path of Destruction
Rule of Two
Dynasty of Evil
Tarkin
I, Jedi
Jedi Search
Dark Apprentice
Champions of the Force

Different. Short. Wow.
By Kevin
This book—what can I say? It is written differently. Differently than anything I have ever read. Why? Never seen so many short sentences. Very short. Super short. Choppy? Yes. Hard to concentrate? Yes. Hyphens? Oh—the hyphens. Never seen so many hyphens—in my entire life. His writing style? Hard to follow. Just like this review. So many short sentences. Likes all these I am writing. I can be a writer too. Obviously. This is how the whole book is. Many examples. The hyphens—did I mention all the hyphens?

Characters? I don’t really care about them. Who are they? I don’t know. I can’t follow. Names? Not sure—can’t tell. I know Wedge—that’s about it. Too bad. I love Star Wars. Been a Star Wars fan—forever. I love Star Wars. Then I heard about it—this book. A new canon—“Wow” I said, “A new book? A new hope for Star Wars.” Then—I read it. Not all—just some of it. The first chapter really—then I had to write a review—Wow. First review on Amazon—ever!

Then—I looked up. An hour passed—only one chapter read. To the fridge. Another beer. Gonna be a long night. Can I finish this—not sure. (The book I mean, not the beer—I can finish the beer). I will try—try hard. Maybe coffee? Yes. No more beer. Just coffee. Is the rest of this book like the first chapter? Not sure—probably. I need some pizza. Super short sentences—perhaps. I will find out—eventually. When? I am not sure—a month? A year? Random things placed here and there. Out of order—it seems.

What is good so far? The cover—the picture on the cover. Epic. Cool. Awesome. Would make a good poster. Maybe the rest is different—doubtful. Gonna give it a shot—soon. Would I recommend this book? Is Jar-Jar funny? Do you love short sentences? Lots of short sentences—and hyphens? If you love hyphens—this book is for you. Whoever invented hyphens—is gonna be a happy person—after reading this. Gonna give it another shot—don’t wanna give up too soon. May the force be with—me.
