Excellent Complement to Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide

The Zombie Combat Manual is not a mere retreading of Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. This book takes one small aspect of Brooks' book and delves deeply and broadly into it.

The Zombie Combat Manual not only discusses various weapons to use in lieu of a firearm; it also acts as a training manual for anyone in any physical condition, featuring physical assessments and exercise programs.

Of course it has the obligatory chapter on offensive and defensive equipment, which is seemingly exhaustive, but it also touches on a topic that Brooks omits, which is carrying and protecting children. Imagine being a parent of a newborn or toddler and having to not only survive but protect them as well. Being a father, I could appreciate this section greatly.

Additionally, there's an entire chapter on combat strategies and techniques for fighting the undead. With this chapter, Ma practically creates a new form of martial art with step-by-step illustrations showing how to position, maneuver, and strike with various weapons in various situations of melee combat with a zombie.

If you're a fan of Max Brooks' interviews in World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, then you'll enjoy the interviews in this book as well. In fact, one could almost plant these same stories into the World War Z setting.

Overall, Lovers of Max Brooks' work, as I am, should not look at this book as a competing product, but instead should see Ma's contribution as a complementary product. The content of this book will only better prepare you in the event that you find yourself having to engage in melee combat with a zombie despite all of the tips and strategies followed from Zombie Survival Guide.

NOT a retread of Max Brook's work!

So far, the five star reviewers before me have pretty much voiced my opinions quite nicely. What I will add is that comparing Roger Ma's book to a rip-off/retread of Max Brooks' work (of which I am a huge fan) is like saying anyone currently writing vampire romance is ripping off Dan Curtis's Dark Shadows (or, if you want to go further back, Bram Stoker's Dracula). Both the vampire and the zombie genre have room for many variations on the original themes. Did Brooks include the Bum's Rush in his book as a survival tactic? No, he did not. Both Brooks and Ma have a place on my bookshelf, and both authors deserve kudos for their work.

An authentic and legit addition to the Romero zombie mythology

I just finished reading this book, and if you're a zombie fan and have wondered how to not simply survive, but to battle and defeat the zombie undead, you will love this book.

As a huge Max Brooks (Zombie survival guide), George Romero (Night, Dawn, Day of the Dead Trilogy) and Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead) fan, this book takes a unique angle to the zombie mythology by focusing where these other writers have not, specifically hand to hand combat against the undead. The book goes into detail about specific types of weapons- long, medium, short ranges, how to best utilized the most battle hardened weapons, such as a katana or battle axe, to the more accessible and practical garage tools like the shovel, pitchfork, or hunting knife. Interweaved within these techniques are some pretty graphic and intense first hand accounts and interviews from those who've battled the undead one on one. Well written (unlike some other zombie pub schlock) this book I think will entertain all hardcore fans, as well as the casual one's who ever wondered how they would handle oneself when encountering a zombie confrontation firsthand.

I can attest after reading this book that it is NOT a rehash of Brooks' work, as some others have previously suggested, but rather a great addition to the genre. My favorite and most original chapter for me is on how to protect your children against the undead. Stroller vs. baby bjorn. Great stuff!

The illustrations are great as well that give visual context to the techniques and weapons discussed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone into horror and zombies. Don't trust the online trolls- when there's no more room in hell, there's enough room in the zombie world for Brooks and Ma to coexist together. And from what I'm seeing from the other reviews online, they agree as well.

What really makes this book shine is that it isn't about just finishes that work or finishes that the author happens to like. A more than decent introduction to Minimalist Syntax

I decided to write a review, since the only review amazon currently has for this book does not give it much justice, undeservedly so. Back in the day when I started to deal with Minimalist Syntax, this was one of the first introductory level materials I was advised to read, and with retrospect, all I can say is that it gives a fairly solid introduction to the latest proceedings in syntactic theory, and thus can even be used by those who possess an already substantial knowledge of earlier versions of mainstream generative grammar (MGG in the following) such as GB, or EST, but would like to know what directions the field has taken in recent years.

The material presented in the book is fairly well organised, starting out with elementary concepts, first introducing the goal of the generative tradition as a whole before going into actual details of particular structures, which I believe is both didactically sound and interesting, besides justifing the necessity of the book itself. Supposedly the book is self sufficient, and no background in syntax or linguistics is presupposed, but as far as I can judge, it comes in handy if the potential reader has at least a general idea of the basic concepts of linguistic analysis (Thematic roles, grammatical functions, arguments, etc.) since given the relative conciseness of the book, there is not always enough space to build up the argument from scratch.

The rest of the chapters follow the typical "U-curve" often found in syntax textbooks, whereas an analysis presented early in the book is reevaluated and complicated in a later chapter, and is assigned a theoretically and empirically more adequate explanation. This may disturb those readers who want to see the "correct representation" as soon as they encounter a phenomenon, instead of reading pages of reasoning WHY the new analysis is better than the one introduced 100 pages earlier, but since some of these elaborations presuppose material covered in later chapters, it would have been exceedingly difficult not to use the U-curve without completely destroying the line of argument in the book.

Of course, good as the book is, it definitely has some faults. First and foremost, the framework presupposed is essentially an amalgamation of often competing theories and analyses of leading figures in the field. This is in itself not a problem, since differing views are often alluded to through the pages, but advanced or more attentive readers may find some discrepancies in the framework itself, or contradictions in the text. Many of these seemingly contradictory statements have an explanation however, albeit deeply buried in the often quite unforgiving primary literature, which one cannot expect an introductory textbook to cover.
To give an example for the interested: Throughout the book, X-bar theory is used extensively as a notational device, along with a more modern "Merge" driven conception of derivation. This has interesting consequences for the representation of adjuncts vs complements for instance. Radford itself claims in the book that Bare Phrase Structure is more a leading idea in the field than a widely accepted notation, but I still believe that making the choice of using a truly minimalist framework with BPS notation would have resulted in less confusion.

These problems are dwarfed by the fact that by the end of the book, one will have at least a general idea of many hard-to-grasp concepts like phases, impenetrability, split CP, etc. and can reasonably proceed to original works written by specialists of the field, which will no doubt clear up any confusion, provided one is perseverant enough.

Don't be misled by my rating, I gave it 4 stars due to my intimate involvement with Minimalism, and the sometimes unnecessary theoretical simplification. Nonetheless, it is a great book for anyone interested in contemporary syntactic theory

The worst linguistics book I was ever forced to buy, or use.

This book had many obtuse examples that did not support the points being made. It wandered all over the place with no real organized format. There was no stepping stone approach. Frequently the examples were gramatically incorrect. The professor spent more time in clas explaining what Radford meant than teaching new material. I can honestly say that in all the text books I have ourchased for my 130 hours of college credit this was the worst to work from. There were major gramatical errors every 1-2 pages. Many topic were explained with no further reasoning than "Becase I said so." The author assumed that the reader was going to continue on for a doctorate and not e sitting in a sophmore class struggling to come to terms with his difficult jargon. The professor I had for this course ultimately decided to drop the book after one semester,

The author write three very steamy, hot incredible arousing stories and the characters made the stories that much more believable. So if you’re looking too entertained for a while definitely check this box set out. You will not be disappointed! We humans want to feel good and part of the process, when we see results in such convincing manner; we realize how effective the method described in this book and how much you enjoy the Action.
Explores every fantasy! Nice plot and buildup to the action. Very descriptive, the authors don't miss a trick. I recommend this for those quiet lonely nights. It about time one of the book bundles that I actually enjoyed reading. Good subject matters could have been a little longer but much better than what I have been reading. Enjoy reading it.

Anyhow this is entertaining stuff and I recommend it for a fast

Furiously fast is what this trilogy of stories is. Abigail Kinkade knows how to write an action story and this one is hot and steamy too. The heroes are vigilantes who are out to clean up some of the drug dealing scene and they do it in an explosive way.

The heroine, Leslie, is a tough lady with a heart of gold and she's the driver for the three vigilantes. Think Hulk Hogan, a couple of buddies and a hot girl. Anyhow this is entertaining stuff and I recommend it for a fast, sexy read with a surprise ending.

Cant a couple Talk?

I did not like this book. Tre was so angry at Leigh. He would treat her poorly that she was afraid to be in the same room with him. Tre felt his heart was being ripped out everything he saw Leigh. It took them over ten years to get this right. I really dont like a book with the majority of it is filled with questions never being asked and a lot of assumtions. Then as the other reviewer mention was the ending. There was no ending. Once everything was reveled and it looked like they could finially be together Leigh leaves Tre for serveral months. She didnt call him, she didnt return his calls nothing. Again the lack of communication. Then she just comes back with the carefee additude and the writer was giving you the impression that Leigh my be pregnant but nothing was mentioned. Did not like this one at all.

Go read her other book - Addicted to you. She wrote this under the name of Bethany Kane.

Another Beth Kery Hit

One of my favorite authors has again given me a good read. Long lost loves reunite but, guilt keeps her from being happy until she discovers the truth. But will he accept her a third time? I highly recommend this novel as the twists, turns and steamy love scenes will peak all your interests. This is a page turner. Would love to see a sequel......Come on Beth and give us another!

I only wish it were longer

This was a great book. I loved the ways she flashed back from one time to another. The only thing I wish is that it would have been a little longer. Maybe there will be a part 2 somewhere down the road.

Interesting, well reasoned but narrow.

Having been fortunate enough to study under Dr Botting when at university, I am in a position to have heard many of the theories espoused in this book as tutorial topics. Here, of course, there is a variety, but nevertheless the substance is all reasonably similar: that the treaties of Gothic apply to aspects of both the cultural and social infrastructure without consideration to either restraint or boundary, beyond a notation of where the parameters are breached.
Dr Botting's major difficulty is his insistence on writing in the nude. It became a regular talking point, for while I was at Lancaster he would sit starkers in his (glass fronted) office, writing furiously, reading furiously or smoking furiously, or all three, and he would often pass many hours in this fashion, and one would only ever hear a sound from him when some stray ember of ash found its way downwards, with the result that a catatonic cry of "yaroo! my knadgers!" could be heard all across Lancaster's picturesque campus.
It is indeed a compliment to his sturdy Northern built that Dr Botting's nudity did not make him a laughing stock. Indeed, I know of several people who were in no little way intimidated by his, erm, intellectual presence, and did not feel that they could endure his presence for an entire class.
Of course, there is more to Frankenstein that Fred Botting's nudity, although many have confused the two. It is a much observed factor of Mary Shelley's writing that the juxtaposition of humanity and ignorance, or inhumanity and great learning, offer explanations of the outside world.
Personally, I found this a worthy addition to the case book series, which began with a series of essays on Shakespearean plays. Frankenstein may not be the funniest text of the Romantic period, but it does attract the hairest professors.
