Death Representations in Literature: Forms and Theories (Dying and Death Studies), by Adriana Teodorescu

If the academic field of death studies is a prosperous one, there still seems to be a level of mistrust concerning the capacity of literature to provide socially relevant information about death and to help improve the anthropological understanding of how culture is shaped by the human condition of mortality. Furthermore, the relationship between literature and death tends to be trivialized, in the sense that death representations are interpreted in an over-aestheticized manner. As such, this approach has a propensity to consider death in literature to be significant only for literary studies, and gives rise to certain persistent cliches, such as the power of literature to annihilate death. This volume overcomes such stereotypes, and reveals the great potential of literary studies to provide fresh and accurate ways of interrogating death as a steady and unavoidable human reality and as an ever-continuing socio-cultural construction. The volume brings together researchers from various countries--the USA, the UK, France, Poland, New Zealand, Canada, India, Germany, Greece, and Romania--with different academic backgrounds in fields as diverse as literature, art history, social studies, criminology, musicology, and cultural studies, and provides answers to questions such as: What are the features of death representations in certain literary genres? Is it possible to speak of an homogeneous vision of death in the case of some literary movements? How do writers perceive, imagine, and describe their death through their personal diaries, or how do they metabolize the death of the "significant others" through their writings? To what extent does the literary representation of death refer to the extra-fictional, socio-historically constructed "Death"? Is it moral to represent death in children's literature? What are the differences and similarities between representing death in literature and death representations in other connected fields? Are metaphors and literary representations of death forms of death denial, or, on the contrary, a more insightful way of capturing the meaning of death?

Einstein's Unfinished Symphony: Listening to the Sounds of Space-Time, by Marcia Bartusiak

A new generation of observatories, now being completed worldwide, will give astronomers not just a new window on the cosmos but a whole new sense with which to explore and experience the heavens above us. Instead of collecting light waves or radio waves, these novel instruments will allow astronomers to at last place their hands upon the fabric of space-time and feel the very rhythms of the universe.

These vibrations in space-time-or gravity waves-are the last prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity yet to be observed directly. They are his unfinished symphony, waiting nearly a century to be heard. When they finally reveal themselves to astronomers, we will for the first time be able to hear the cymbal crashes from exploding stars, tune in to the periodic drumbeats from swiftly rotating pulsars, listen to the extended chirps from the merger of two black holes, and eavesdrop on the remnant echoes from the mighty jolt of the Big Bang itself.

When Einstein introduced general relativity in 1915, it was hailed as a momentous conceptual achievement. Einstein attained celebrity status. But, once scientists verified what they could of the theory, given the scant experiments available at the time, general relativity became "largely a theoretical curiosity," writes Marcia Bartusiak.

Now, after decades of technological advancement, general relativity is being tested with unprecedented accuracy. It even affects our everyday lives. Satellites used by both travelers and soldiers to peg their positions require constant corrections of Einsteinian precision. Meanwhile, the first gravity-wave "telescopes"-including the LIGO facility-are about to come alive.

In Einstein's Unfinished Symphony, Bartusiak captures the excitement as two gravity-wave observatories in Louisiana and Washington State, as well as others in Italy, Germany, and Japan, approach operation and physicists gear up to begin their work to register the long-predicted quakes in space-time.

With each chapter, Bartusiak continues her musical metaphor in tracing the story of general relativity, from the time "Maestro" Einstein enters physics, through the "Starlight Waltz" of neutron stars twisting space-time around themselves, to the "Dissonant Chords" of controversy as physicists fight to get their radically new observatories approved, through the "Finale" as a worldwide endeavor in gravity-wave astronomy is launched.

From Publishers Weekly
Einstein is hot this year; not only has his brain traveled cross-country but his personal and scientific lives are being explored in depth. Gravity waves aren't as well-known as the more familiar theory of E=mc2 (which is getting its own book this season, see Forecasts, Sept. 18), but cross-promotion of related titles will boost sales of this graceful little book about the mysterious subject. Those waves are the only form of radiation predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity that remain undetected (a gravity wave is created by the movement of an object; it is not the same as gravitational attraction). Unlike a wave of light, which moves through a medium, space-time, a gravity wave is similar to a wave in water, which is movement of the mediumDhowever, a wave on a pond will go around you as you sit in a fishing boat, whereas a gravity wave will go through an astronaut in a spaceship as easily as it will pass through a star. Scientists predict the only gravity waves we will be able to detect at first are those from such galaxy-shaking events as supernova explosions or the collisions of binary neutron stars, but once gravity waves are graphed and analyzed, we should be able to confirm the existence of black holes, explore time back to the threshold of the big bang, and accurately map the dimensions of the universe. Today kilometers-long interferometer detectors are going online in Washington and Louisiana to detect gravity waves. Tomorrow scientists hope to have a space-based observatory tagging along behind Earth as it orbits the sun. Bartusiak (Thursday's Universe) has been writing about gravity waves for more than a decade, and her familiarity with the search and the scientists involved results in a thorough, engrossing and valuable chronicle. Great review of the history of gravitational wave physics
By Jarrod D. Knudson
The book takes you on a journey through the history of physics since Einstein published his theories of relativity. Sufficient background information is provided without the mathematical details that might handicap those of us in other fields. Ms. Bartusiak does a fine job of explaining the many intricacies of relativity and gravitational wave physics in a clear and concise manner (for the physics layperson).

A detailed account of the testing of Einstein's theories during his lifetime and over the decades since he left us is provided. Einstein's insight was phenomenal (at least as far as I am concerned, being a non-physicist/engineer). I'm still amazed by the leap that he was able to take, thus changing physics forever. Not since Newton has anyone changed the face of our perception of the physical world around us (the universe's many objects and the evolution of the concept of space-time).

The majority of the text is devoted to the decades of research and development over gravitational wave detection. The concerted effort in the field is actually quite phenomenal. Since gravitational waves have never officially been detected, one might surmise that the book can't be very exciting. On the contrary, the history of the development of the technology for modern day test detection systems is very fascinating. I learned a great deal about the basic premises of relativity physics without having to take three or four courses in calculus. I was actually quite thrilled to find a book so easy to follow.

I will be rejoycing for Einstein (and all of humankind) when the headlines read, "for the first time, ripples through space-time have been recorded across the globe". What a glorious day for science. I can't wait!!!

An important preview of things to come
By Robert Adler
This book provides a rare opportunity for non-scientists to understand an important scientific advance before it happens.

Bartusiak provides readers with a thorough history of the decades of theorizing, organizing, and development that have led to the current generation of gravitational-wave observatories eagerly awaiting the first detection of the space-distorting pulses predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity nearly a century ago.

From my point of view, the book presents a bit more of the history and politics of gravitational-wave research, and a bit less of the science, than I might like. Still, Bartusiak tells a very important story in great detail. She clearly did her homework; the book is full of the kind of details that come only from visiting sites and interviewing key players face-to-face.

I thought that the most important point Bartusiak made did not come until at least two-thirds of the way through the book. She finally made it clear that the key problem in detecting gravitational waves rippling through spacetime is isolating the detector from every other influence, insulating and quieting it to the point that a change in length no larger than a fraction of the diameter of an atom can be detected. That's why, when gravitational waves are finally detected, it will be a great technical triumph as well as a vindication of Einstein's theory and a powerful new window on the universe.

On the whole I'd describe Bartusiak's writing as clear and well organized, but not inspiring. However, she did come up with one delightful metaphor. In describing the impending collision of two black holes, one of the predicted sources of detectable ripples in spacetime, she wrote, "Picture two black holes slowly circling each other, like a pair of sumo wrestlers warily checking each other out in the ring." I would have liked the book even more if Bartusiak had provided more imaginative writing like that, and more science as well.

Still, if you want to know what the first detection of gravitational waves will mean, and the enormous amount of effort that has gone into this impending discovery, _Einstein's Unfinished Symphony_ is well worth reading.

Robert Adler, author of _Science Firsts: From the Creation of Science to the Science of Creation_ (Wiley & Sons, 2002); and _Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates to the Human Genome_ (Wiley & Sons, 2004).

A Tribute to Joseph Weber, the LIGO project and Much More
By Tatsuo Tabata
In this book Marcia Bartusiak, an excellent science journalist, writes about scientists' endeavors to detect gravitational waves coming from deep space. The existence of gravity waves was predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, and they are considered to have the frequency falling into the audio range, but no one has ever listened to them. Thus the author elegantly entitled this book "Einstein's Unfinished Symphony." Each chapter also has the title related to music. For example, the chapter about the discovery of the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar, indirect evidence for gravity waves, is cogently entitled "Pas De Deux."
Bartusiak's sentences are also rhythmic like music, especially in the earliest chapters, so that the reader comfortably learns about Einstein's discovery of the origin of gravity and Renaissance in relativity made theoretically by John Archibald Wheeler and experimentally by Robert Dicke. Wheeler is cited to have explained general relativity in one clear sentence, "Mass tells space-time how to curve, and space-time tells mass how to move."
The pioneer of experimental work directly to catch gravity waves was Joseph Weber. He published his first results in 1969, claiming evidence for observation of gravity waves based on coincident signals from two bar detectors. Unfortunately, by the middle of 1970s nearly everyone came to agree that Weber was mistaken. Bartusiak writes that Weber had however created a momentum that could not be stopped. Weber died on 30 September 2000, just a few months before the publication of this book. Thus the book partially happened to become one of the earliest tributes to Weber. His first bar detector is now shown in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C.
Then comes the central story of this book, the construction, improvements and prospects of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). LIGO is a gigantic instrument system placed in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. Its construction started as a collaborative project, involving dozens of scientists and the cost of more than $370 million. Among those scientists, Rainer Weiss is considered to be the founding father of the effort. His career began with a determination to get rid of the noises in a hi-fi system, only to transfer that interest ironically or rather wonderfully to reducing the noises that could mask a gravity wave.
Each piece of LIGO's detector includes a marvel of engineering. LIGO's "classy" physics and the virgin territory of possible gravity wave astronomy are gathering young physicists from around the world. Potential sources of gravity waves cataloged so far by Kip Thorne's Caltech team and other theoretical groups around the world are many and varied from black hole collisions to neutron-star mountains. The author tells us all the details of these in a quite understandable manner. She also describes gravitational research in countries other than United States and projects by the use of spacecrafts.
The book is well balanced between theory and experiment, between science and sociology, and between anecdotes and stories of serious pursuit. As for anecdotes, there is one about the fact that the term "black hole" caused a problem for a while in France. Read the book for the reason. This is a masterpiece of nonfiction, and will absorb the mind of both a scientist and a layperson.

An overall interesting read. Believer or not this one is worth a look if you have any interest in the subject whatsoever. Strieber makes some fantastically interesting points and hypothesis' on the visitor phenomena. And he himself, in this book, does not pin anything down to one thing. He approaches the subject with a completely open and thoughtful mind.
The only reason this book is not a five star book in my view is that at some points it does seem to drag on a bit.
But it is a very conversational and easy read. And if you're anything like me you'll tear through this book in under a week.

What if it really is a true story?
By Karen DeWitz
I read this book back in the 80s and bought this copy to return it to my collection. I have rarely read a book that led me so strongly to a feeling of "what if". The appendices (as well as the text) show that while it may or may not be a true story of ongoing alien encounters, the author believes it really happened. Intriguing and just a little bit edge-of-your-seat spooky.

An open-minded analysis of the phenomena that refuse to go away
By 3CatMama
The author looks deep and analyses his own and others' experience. His approach is thorough and as unbiased as any scientist can be. This approach is very satisfying intellectually and makes the writing dense. One must put this book down occasionally and think. Unfortunately the writing is not well-laid-out and hard to follow at times.

Doesn't do it for me
By A Customer
This book is a text book in my current statistics class. I am not too familiar with alternate text books on the subject, but I do not find his explanations to be clear enough to be helpful on their own. He assumes a level of sophistication about mathematics that this reader does not have. If your math background is excellent, you will do well. If not, be forwarned.

Social Statistician's Source Book
By P Grossman
This is a heavy-going textbook used for graduate level social scientists. Certainly not for casual reading, (except for a possible cure for chronic insomia). But the definitive text and reference for descriptive statistics of populations. Excellent for the serious student, an absolute must for the professional in probability practice.

An excellent resource.
By A. Carrington
While in grad school at the U of MD in 1971, I used this textbook extensively. It is, indeed, an excellent text! And yes, you do need to have a math background beyond j.h.s., but it is not a daunting , nor an impossible task to grasp the material.

Hangeul: Korea's Unique Alphabet (Korea Essentials), by Robert Koehler

Hangeul, the indigenous writing system of the Korea, was promulgated in 1446. It is an ingenious system that utilizes modern and scientific linguistic theories and principles of Korean traditional culture to perfectly express the sounds of the Korean language. Crafted by some of the leading scholars of the age, including the brilliant King Sejong the Great, the alphabet has been widely lauded by scholars the world over for its advanced phonetic system and ease of use. Noted linguist Geoffrey Sampson, in his work “Writing Systems: A Linguistic Introduction,” even went as far as to say, “Whether or not it is ultimately the best of all conceivable scripts for Korean, Hangeul must unquestionably rank as one of the great intellectual achievements of humankind.”

This work examines the unique characteristics of the Hangeul writing system and its impact on Korean society. The first chapter looks at why Hangeul is regarded by so many scholars as the world’s preeminent writing system. The second chapter looks at the structure of the alphabet, examining the linguistic and philosophical concepts that underlie the system. The third chapter explains the historical process by which Hangeul was invented, while the fourth chapter provides an in-depth look at King Sejong the Great, the monarch widely credited with the creation of the writing system. The fifth chapter canvasses the subsequent development of the alphabet over the ensuing centuries and its impact on Korean culture and society, while the sixth chapter looks at how Hangeul has helped promote the use of information technology in Korea. The final chapter looks at how Hangeul inspires Korean culture and arts, including genres such as fashion and dance.

Hangeul in one small, neat package
By Stephen Constantelos
This fun little book is informative, well-written, and eye-catchingly illustrated.

The first five chapters were particularly interesting to me, covering the alphabet's history and why it has been praised by linguists so long after its development in the 15th century. Chapter five discusses why women took to the alphabet first and the disparaging names sometimes given to Hangeul in the old days: as an alphabet for women or children, vulgar, or "outhouse" writing. A small piece on how the Indonesian Cia-Cia people have adopted the script is touching and thought-provoking as well.

The book really does a great job at capturing the variety and beauty of Hangeul fonts and uses, and although praise of the alphabet seems to almost comically know no bounds for the authors, the graphics on Hangeul's use in the arts, in technology, and the pages of various typefaces really are outstanding, showing the beauty of this most rational of scripts. There's a handy section at the end of the book on places to study Korean, online and offline, and I must say it's very tempting...

Book on the original Korean Alphabet
By Gary Snyder
I already knew that Hangul, or Hangeul, was and is a highly regarded original new alphabet created for Koreans by their own leadership in the 16th century. This book provided more detailed information on Hanguil and added a lot to my knowledge. It is unfortunately rather repetitive and written by persons who don't know much about scientific linguistics, so they use some words (like "phonemic") in confusing ways -- but this is the best I've found so far. The bibliography may lead further on and well.

On Becoming an Effective Teacher: Person-centered teaching, psychology, philosophy, and dialogues with Carl R. Rogers and Harold LyonBy

On Becoming an Effective Teacher describes exemplary practices like Teach For America, which highlight the power of person-centered teaching to bring about higher student achievement and emotional intelligence. Lyon situates the classic with the cutting-edge, integrating wisdom with research, anecdote with practical advice, to find truths that reveal paths toward effective teaching.

Jeffrey Cornelius-White, Psy.D., LPC, Professor of Counseling, Missouri State University, USA, Author of Learner Centered Instruction: Building Relationships for Student Success

This fascinating book reveals through current research and contemporary applications that Carl Rogers’ pioneering and radical approach to education is as relevant today as it was in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Brian Thorne, University of East Anglia, UK

Carl Rogers is one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. His influence is similarly outstanding in the fields of education, counselling, psychotherapy, conflict resolution, and peace.

On Becoming an Effective Teacher presents the final unpublished writings of Rogers and as such has, not only unique historical value, but also a vital message for today’s educational crises, and can be read as a prescription against violence in our schools. It documents the research results of four highly relevant, related but independent studies which comprise the biggest collection of data ever accumulated to test a person-centred theory in the field of education. This body of comprehensive research on effective teaching was accomplished over a twenty-year period in 42 U.S. States and in six other countries including the UK, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Israel, and Mexico and is highly relevant to the concerns of teachers, psychologists, students, and parents.

The principal findings of the research in this book show that teachers and schools can significantly improve their effectiveness through programs focusing on facilitative interpersonal relationships. Teachers who either naturally have, or are trained to have empathy, genuineness (congruence), and who prize their students (positive regard) create an important level of trust in the classroom and exert significant positive effects on student outcomes including achievement scores, interpersonal functioning, self-concept, attendance, and violence.

The dialogues between Rogers and Lyon offer a unique and timeless perspective on teaching, counselling and learning. The work of Reinhard Tausch on person-centered teaching for counselors, parents, athletics, and even textbook materials, and the empathic interactions of teachers and students, is among the most thorough and rigorous research ever accomplished on the significance and potential of a person-centered approach to teaching and learning.

This pioneering textbook is highly relevant to educational psychologists and researchers, as well as those in undergraduate and graduate university courses in education, teacher training, counseling, psychology and educational psychology.

Review

"Finally we hear a genuine account of how Carl Rogers work on person-centered education has made and is continuing to make a difference in the lives of students, teachers, and others concerned with the plight of students in today’s increasingly unhealthy school climates and cultures. His views on person-centered education are not only yielding empirically sound empirical results in the US and global school communities but they are inspiring the hope and creativity of students who for too long had no voice. This is a must read for all who care about the plight of today’s children in our increasingly difficult world with few mentors and advocates." - Barbara L. McCombs, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist and Director, University of Denver

"I finished this book, buzzing with ideas, enthusiasm and hope. Although mid- summer break I found myself wishing I could go in to school tomorrow and share these ideas. I will certainly be leaving a copy in the staff room... I hope the title doesn’t restrict the readership to teachers only. In my view it’s a great source of insight into a person-centred approach for all." - Ruth Moore, Person-Centred Quarterly

"This book may prove interesting to established lecturers wishing to reflect further on how they relate to their students. It could be very useful to those starting out on their lecturing careers. It may be particularly thought-provoking to those not already familiar with the person-centred approach as applied to education." - Tony Ward, Department of Health and Social Sciences, University of the West of England, Bristol, Psychology Learning and Teaching.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE, LOVINGLY AND SKILLFULLY PRESENTED
By Gabriel Heilig
One of the hardest things to do is to make the obvious interesting. It should be obvious by now that treating people as self-creating and creative human beings is probably a good idea. Yet when you examine how America goes about educating children, you have to stop and wonder. Are these children we are ordering into rows, sitting at their desks? Children are alive! That's a good thing! Even teachers are alive. That's a good thing, too. But look at America's schools and you wonder whether anyone knows this. Children and their teachers are cooped up together in test-driven curricula. I talked with a man who quit his job as a high school English teacher for 25 years, in one of the "best school systems in the country" (Montgomery County, MD) because he said it had all turned into "scripted learning." He had little authority, despite his experience, in deviating from the script. It was like reading the news, then turning kids over to the testing regimen.

Hal Lyon, an old friend and a passionate advocate of learning, children, and the opportunity to teach children and to learn from them, has assembled a book worthy of the subject and of his passion for it. He cares about kids and his mentor, psychologist Carl Rogers, advanced American psychotherapy by providing "unconditional positive regard" for the people who came to him for help. Rogers helped them by helping them to understand that they were worthy of his or anyone's positive regard—and especially, their own.

Rogers and Lyon knew each other during a tumultuous period in American psychology and education, and their conversations about this introduce several chapters in this book. Lyon has done a lot of work in Germany during the past 20 years and has continued to spread the word and collect the works of other psychologists and educators whom Rogers influenced. The result is a compendium of useful history and information about why we truly need to remember the obvious: that we are human, that children are human, and that the process of education ought to honor that fundamental fact.

This is clearly a labor of love on Dr. Lyon's part and his book is the better for it. He has done real work here, gathering and sorting the research and its findings that demonstrated, unmistakably, that whether we are talking about teaching medical students or kindergartners, treating them like aware human beings capable of creative, non-linear learning is a lot more effective than just treating them as dumpster for data—then testing the dumpster to see if it remembers what was dumped into it.

Written in a calm, lucid, warm-hearted but not soft-headed way, Lyons' book tells a story that needs telling. As a social history of education over the last quarter-century, this is a valuable book. Its message, however, is invaluable. And, sadly, it seems that this message needs to be told again, despite the best efforts, scrupulous research and loving appreciation that Hal Lyon has provided.

Anyone interested in these matters would be well served by picking up this book and opening it. I went through it in one sitting. It's not a thriller, but it tells an important story that still needs to be told, read and understood.

Review of On Becoming an Effective Teacher
By Thomas W. Leo
Review of ‘On Becoming An Effective Teacher’

By Harold C. Lyon, Jr, with Carl R. Rogers and Reinhard Tausch,
(his two famous co-authors died before this book was published).

This book is based on the people/person-centered concept of learning, of teaching.

Initially the reviewer thought that the book, although well written, was for a small, select audience.

Boy, was he ever wrong.

Everyone is a teacher, good or bad, and we start learning literally at birth – the author(s) give as a example the Leboyer method, which in part leaves the umbilical cord attached for a time after birth, then places the newborn in warm water to simulate the environment of the womb the baby just left – and continues on a different track throughout life.

An example was given involving some residents of a community of nursing homes in California who were bedridden. They received a regimen of massage therapy and after a period of time were up and walking around.

Some parts of the book discuss a ‘new man’ arising theory, and while the reviewer agrees with some of his described ‘traits’, on the whole they appear to be nihilistic.

Also there are several sections – most of the book in fact – that treat the ‘teaching’ of ‘students’ literally from birth onward. Excellent, yet no space or thought apparently has been given to mundane but necessarily practical subject of who does the teaching – one of the parents presumably? This then is a full time job, which is exemplary, but it also leads to, poses another question, that of money – where does it come from, in the family of today, where both parents must work ‘outside of the home’, in most cases?
Surely it is not the babysitter, the ‘surrogate parent’?

The reviewer is leaving out the fact that all good teachers from k-12 through medical school and beyond must have the three person-centered traits – empathy, caring, and genuineness – which are hallmarks of really effective teachers. The reviewer is of the opinion that empathy is most important, that the student is a feeling individual, much more than a mere ‘matriculation number’.

There is nothing in the book that is not a good idea, a great way to teach, to learn. The author even discounts the teachers unions as being more for the protection of their members than the advancement of students – great!

A book on teaching, on or about being an effective teacher would not be complete without a section on leadership, and the author is after all a graduate of the premier school in the world for teaching leadership, the United States Military Academy at West Point.

There is also a section on mentoring, continuing education if you will, an invaluable degree of help for the young executive, the military officer who needs a bit more guidance as he/she progresses up the ladder.

The author references Abraham Maslow, of ‘hierarchy of needs’ fame, and then goes into a discussion of ‘Theory X and Theory Y’ styles of Management, of Leadership, with solid, down to earth examples.

About the author:
He began writing early, while a cadet as military editor of the West Point periodical, The Pointer. He published often in his short 7-year Army career in Infantry and Army Magazines with titles like: Cancer Action, Recondo!, The Courage of your Convictions, The Old One-Two (with Gen. Jack Galvin), Man Against Tank, and Invisible Infiltrators. He's the author of 7 books and over 150 articles on eclectic subjects including military strategy, leadership, education, multimedia, psychology, research, hunting, and fishing. After Ranger training and a tour helping Gen. Westmoreland establish the Recondo School, Lyon commanded a rifle company in the 501st for a year – described in the book as his "favorite job ever,” a year in Korea when he authored a counter-guerrilla concept ("Cancer Action") which resulted in his briefing Bobby Kennedy and Gen. Maxwell Taylor, Aide to the CG of the 2nd Infantry Division where he and his CG were fired upon while integrating James Meredith into Ol’ Miss. The book relates the interesting story of how Gov. Wallace met secretly with Gen. Billingslea, Ramsey Clark, and Lyon and offered a deal: if the military agreed to carry Wallace off the steps of the University of Alabama before network TV, that" there’d be no blood shed" and the integration could take place. They called Bobby Kennedy who got President Kennedy on the phone who told them, “Take that deal!”

After Lyon left the military his career continued to be unique as assistant to the president of Ohio University, a political appointment in the Johnson Administration where he relates in the book about using person-centered management within the bureaucracy, project officer for Sesame Street, professorships at Georgetown, Antioch, Dartmouth Medical School, a Fulbright professorship at the University of Munich where he currently teaches physicians to be more effective teachers. He received the Gold Medal in the 32nd International Film & TV Festival of New York, a CINDY Award, the Blue Ribbon in the American Film & Video Festival. His book, Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit (deepwaterspress.com) won the New England Outdoor Writers Association "Best Book of the Year Award" and the Silver Medal in the National eLite Book Awards.

Hal Lyon: An Unsung Hero
By Binyamin Klempner
The tittle of my review just about says what there is to say. The more I learn about the life and writings of Hal Lyon the more I am convinced that he is one of the unsung heroes of our time. The book is both illuminating and charming, much likes its authors.
