The book is interesting. My kids, 4 and 7, and I like to explore the outdoors. The book includes the 5 major classes of vertebrates and most types of invertebrates, and plants. In addition to a lot of information for adult professional naturalists, it also tells you what you can do for fun as an amateur naturalist right in your yard or at home, e.g., put a beautiful spider web on a cardboard, make an ant town, make your own snake stick, make a pitfall trap, etc. Good for homechoolers or any family who like to explore with their kids. That's why the title is "The Amateur Naturalist."

Purchased this book for our grandson who lives in Honduras with his missionary parents. We were delighted and so was he! The book was wonderfully illustrated; and had many projects that he can do. It was great to see him pouring over the book; gleefully pointing out the many interesting things he could do. His main interest has been in bugs/insects....but this book will broaden his horizons as he explores nature with the suggestions and information in this book.

I feel this is an outstanding book on several levels. It is medically accurate. It explains medical terms and conditions clearly and avoids both medical "jargon" and oversimplification. The writer is able to convey the realities and challenges of raising children with autism in a way that could only be achieved by a parent who has "been and done." It is a book that will touch and teach anyone who reads it. It is a beacon of empathy and reassurance to parents and family of children with autism. It acknowledges that the road ahead will be long and difficult in many places, and yet studded with times of unexpected and unforeseeable beauty and joy. In this way it put me in mind of a description of hiking the Appalachian Trail.
For professionals, it is a reminder of what these families have to deal with on a day-to-day basis beyond the clinical appointments, the testing, the therapy interventions, the intensive ongoing home care that is prescribed, and all of the other things that are prescribed in an effort to help. In her matter-of-fact accounts of the day-to-day facts of life for her and her children, she reminds us of the challenges of everyday life that may not be not considered (or may be forgotten) by those who don't have to get "up close and personal" with autism 24/7.
This book documents the grace, kindness, dignity and understanding that families of autistic children must demonstrate on a daily basis to those members of the general public who through word and action can so readily demonstrate their own ignorance, insensitivity and even cruelty in their interactions with autistic children and their families.
Above all, this book is a testament to importance of loving parenting. It highlights the central tenet of unconditional love. It alludes to the fact that children with autism, like all children, are doing the best they can, generally behave exactly the way they are taught, and can feel and respond to love. The author acknowledges the frustrations, failings and fatigue that every parent feels at some time or other, and she suggests to the reader that experiencing failure is not the same as being a failure. She acknowledges the importance of her faith. She conveys the story of her family without any sense of self-pity or resignation. but rather with an attitude of confidence and reassurance that is inspirational and refreshing. I feel this book would be beneficial reading to anyone who is or might someday find themselves dealing with autism--in short, anyone at all.

Occupation therapist thinks book is a must read for parents--all parents!

As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, I have tried to show parents of my clients that first off- they have a child that requires parenting like any other child- which includes schedules, limits, help with eating dressing, bathing, hygiene, and manners, playtime and bedtime. It is an exhausting job. But, special needs children will need additional support, help and understanding.
Delia Samuel has written the parenting manual that captures this important concept. In fact, I think all parents can benefit from her 45 chapters especially-Take Time Outs-- You Will Need Them, Play, Play and Play Some More, and Practice Does Make Perfect.
From an occupational therapist perspective, the most important chapter, besides Sensory Problems, is My Journey To Acceptance. This is an important insight and one that takes time to reach. I have worked with parents in denial, angry parents, depressed parents and with those that had reached acceptance of their child’s special qualities. I never commented to the parents on their attitudes, as I knew they were dealing with a life changing realization at their own pace. But, the parents who had reached the acceptance level, not only had more secure children but could tap into their intuition, based on knowing their child better than anyone else, and work with me in partnership setting up creative strategies to help their children develop skills.
This is an important parenting guide for parents of special needs children written by someone who has and does live it -- as a single working mother raising her own two special sons. I highly recommend this book to parents of not only children of special needs or autistic children but to all parents because each child is special in some way, some just more so.

This book is a beautifully honest window into the day-to-day challenges of caring for children with special needs; however, it has the capability to bless anyone that picks it up. It is a story of hope, faith, and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges. It will bring tears and laughter – sometimes in the same chapter - but most importantly, it will inspire you.

The book can be read straight through or even a chapter a day for strategies, pick-me-ups, and gentle reminders to never give up on yourself or those you love. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter – they are simple, yet beautiful mantras to live by. This story truly embodies Dan Reeves’ quote: “Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter.”

The author has poured her heart into these pages and courageously shared her struggles and triumphs. She has opened the floor for honest discussion and hopefully change in a subject that demands our attention. It is past time we start understanding and demonstrating the love and acceptance that children of special needs require – whether it be in our families, our schools, or the general public. This amazing story is an excellent step in that direction and a refreshing account of unconditional love.

Great Content, Gentle Delivery

When I first saw the title for this book, I thought it was going to be another of those books that make you feel sick and worthless once you get to the end. This couldn't have been further from the truth. Allen's book was engaging, gentle, but powerful. It was thorough in describing the impact of power and privilege in a way that can be felt and understood even by those who are not familiar with (or generally interested in) critical studies and sociology. I found this to be a text that I could engage with, but also one that I could share with those who had a hard time seeing the lines of power and how they impact all of our relationships in many different ways.
I highly recommend this book both to those who have worked with the material of oppression for a long time as well as for those who are struggling to understand what it's all about. The book is powerful and gentle at the same time - something that is very important when dealing with issues of oppression and equity.

This book really makes a difference!

I adopted this very readable book as one of several required books for my Multicultural Psychology class and it has had a tremendous impact on my students. Johnson explains the concept of privilege, as it applies to race, gender and sexual orientation, in ways that allow my White students and other students with privilege to hear and understand without getting defensive. He desribes why change is difficult but not impossible, what we can all do to stop supporting "the system" and why we should. I recommend it highly for both college and high school students and the general adult population.

Superb, non-threatening and helpful

As an instructor working in the Humanities, finding non-threatening ways to talk about privilege, whiteness, and/or racism is very challenging. As I read the negative reviews, I am even more aware of how difficult it is to get these ideas across without being accused of self-hatred, etc. In an effort to encourage positive self reflection on these complex issues, I have read many of the foundation works Dr. Johnson mentions. His recapituation of these ideas is indeed gentle. One of the best things he does is make it possible for individuals to recognize that, while they may have unearned entitlements in one area, they may not have them in another. In this way, it is possible for practically everyone to recognize the feeling of being an outsider and this can lead to a compassion and understanding that has NOTHING TO DO with guilt. This work can create a bridge. As an instructor in the area of cultural studies, I often must challenge individuals who believe feeling guilty is all they can do. It isn't. Dr. Johnson gives us actions that we as individuals can actually engage. BTW the chapter on Capitalism is elegant dynamite.

If you are open to the possibility that things can get better through a personal self-reflective understanding of our socio-economic location, read this book. If not, don't waste your time.

Loved it!

OMG! A real story, with real plot, real characters, real writing, and real sex! Loved it. I've added it to my Listmania "Quality Taboo Erotica." http://www.amazon.com/lm/R2SFG98MD0Q4A0/. There aren't many taboo erotic stories this well written.

It's every teenage boy's fantasy -- five beautiful girls are in love with him and he gets to deflower them all! And best of all, one of them is his sister! Yes, it sounds dumb, but it's not. It's refreshing to see an author who pays so much attention to real writing. It's a full-length novel, with characters that you can (almost) believe. I was impressed.

Arousing good tale

This was a difficult story to tell, but Robert Lubrican did an excellent job writing this robust and erotic novel about young love and desire. It deals with issues most people will not recognize, are not aware of, or simply reject on moral or religious grounds. True, it is simply a very imaginative tale, but delves into avenues hardly explored for their instructive benefits along sexual and relationship mores. What I'm trying to tastefully say is that "Tumblr Sibling" was an arousing good tale and may have gone (at least from our current perspective) where "no man has gone before". The story is shocking, but delightful, yet, all in all very believable and "acceptable". For those outside the box, or for those who want to venture there, this is an intriguing and satisfying yarn. Hope you enjoy it.

Enjoyable

A happy polygamous story. Thutmose (Tut) recounts how his life changed after finding some pictures on Tumblr. The story was enjoyable during the discovery phase where Tut is just along for the ride enjoying his luck being the center of the girls plan. Later on though I enjoyed less as Tut is still out of the loop and not in the least concerned or territorial.

Unstoppable Force meets Immovable Object: Mason Blackthorne and Daniel Cross

This book was a pleasure to read.

SETTING:
In a sentence Blackthorne is a Gay New Adult romance starting at a Hogwarts full of real (and power hungry) people.

ROMANCE AND SEX:
The romance between Daniel Cross and Mason Blackthorne burns very hot, physically and emotionally. The addition of Daniel and Mason's beasts' attraction is fuel to the fire. There are steamy scenes while Daniel struggles to keep from bonding with Mason so you don't have to wait for the emotional happy ending for physicality to enter into the story.

There is more to Mason's pursuit of Daniel than appears at first. It isn't so much a chase that starts when Mason's conduit dragon emerges as a story of denied attraction and affection between the both of them. The consummation of the emotional relationship is just as enjoyable and hard fought as the physical consummation.

Intrinsic to the romance is Mason's prickly nature and Daniel's fight to control his own nature. Mason is aggressive, angry, and quick to lash out. Daniel is still, quiet, dangerous, trying to keep a firm hand on his own temper and power.

CHARACTER GROWTH:
The majority of the story is about Daniel's personal growth. Daniel must face the forces that destroyed his family and accept his magical self. He also must grow to embrace his bond with Mason.

Mason's transformation is more subtle. As the story unfurls the reader's perception of Mason changes and we appreciate the growth he has accomplished to become a hero instead of a villain. He takes the final steps into independence and happiness in the story. Both Daniel and Mason grow separately and in relation to each other.

EDITING
The work was well written and well edited. No editing or spelling error took me out of the flow of the story.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
I enjoyed the premise, the writing, the love story, and the sex scenes. Daniel and Mason were a joy to watch dance around one another. The world was gritty and realistic without being depressing. The secondary characters were three dimensional. The plot line stood up to scrutiny. I am looking forward to the second book which will star one of the supporting characters (Ethan) who was pivotal to the happy resolution of this book.

Writing is good. Ms Sins has been getting better since I have started reading her works.

Writing is so good that one is willing to forgive both the very heavy Potter-series-inspiration (the MC has lost his whole family to evil magicians; the academy where he studies is to be reached with a train... yes, A T.R.A.I.N., etc. etc.) and the hyperbolic imagery when it comes to the too long and too frequent sex scenes.

There are limits, though, as to what one is willing to put up with.
I am trying to avoid spoilers here, but there is a scene where people get attacked and many, many of them get seriously hurt. The MC defends his love interest, at first, and that is perfectly fine. As soon as he makes sure said love interest is safe, what does the MC do? He has sex with him. He does not help all the people lying injured and suffering nearby. He has sex. And the author regales us with another lengthy sex scene to prove to us how raw is the passion the MC feels for his lover.

No.
I threw -figuratively- my Kindle against the wall and stopped reading. Good writing is useless if an author does not know what to do with it and, if this work has so many plot issues so early in the storyline, what will have happened by the time we read the second instalment?

Well done young mages come into power and conflict

Magical young men come into power they they don't quite know how to handle. Cross and Blackthrone have an antagonist love hate relationship at the magic Academy. They come into their powers after graduation and Blackthrone is now seen as an endless power source for whoever can bond with him. His parents put out a notice of what he is in the paper and that he is available. They are deliciously evil and power hungry themselves.

Cross is very conflicted about magic and abuse of power. His family was killed and their power stolen. He tries to turn his back on his power and his attraction to Blackthorne. But then he finds out that his family's killer is courting / trageting Blackthorne.

The world building was great in this story and the writing above average. The characters are complex. They aren't always nice but the reasons for that become apparent. They are as likely to knife each other as kiss but underneath they have integrity. They stumble over figuring out what is the right thing to do and often don't agree.

I will continue reading this author. A nice find.
